Don't know if there is any interest in this but I thought I would put it up. Came from my family business when we sold it and has been in this spot since the late 80's from the information I can gather.

It is a Mosler safe built in 1955. It does lock, but all you have to do to open it is turn it back to the right so I assume no combination is set on it?? I don't want to mess with the lock much because I am afraid it might not open back up. It's BEEF, and I have no idea what to ask for it. If anyone is interested we can talk, thanks!

how can you tell if it is or not?

I'm hardly a safe expert, but it appears that thing may have a "B" burglary rating, which isn't handed out to just any old hunk of steel calling itself a safe. The bulk of the glorified tuna cans that are sold today as low/moderately priced "gun safes" only rate a "RSC" classification (Residential Security Container), which means they get real nervous at the sight of a big can opener. Those 3" walls almost certainly aren't hiding wallboard for fireliner - a true burglary rated safe (even the minimum rated ones) normally use either a whole lotta really thick steel plate for the walls, or concrete or some similar very hard and very heavy composite sandwiched between thinner inner and outer steel skins.

On one hand, I'd kinda like to talk to you about it, but then the uncertainty about the lock and the monumental PITA it would be (for me at least) to move that 1000lb+ beast has that little annoying voice in my head shouting "DANGER, WILL ROBINSON, DANGER!!!!"

Yes its very well built and stout, that is for sure, especially when you feel and see it in person. Talk to me, were both in Kentucky. With a little forethought I am sure moving it wouldn't be to much trouble.

That one even has a relocker to prevent someone from trying to drill out the lock mechanisim. Nice safe! I'm sure a competent locksmith could either reset the combination to anything you want or repair the lock if it is indeed broken.

I've been looking for a safe for a while, and can tell you a generalized price that I see these go for.

I'd estimate $200-300 for this one due to it being a later model and paint in fair condition. Maybe a bit more than $300 due to the inner file drawers.

It's the shear mass these things are that deter anyone from wanting to buy and then deal with them. If I lived close by to you, I'd give you $100. It's definitely a great, solid safe.

I would think being very thick is the whole point of a safe if it's good quality material? I'll see how it plays out, if I can only get $100 I will more then likely just keep it for now and store stuff in since it is somewhat unique and has some history for my family.

how can you tell if it is or not?

The doors are open. That is how you can tell LOL No, the walls are filled with concrete in most of them. I have sold them for $500 that size The real old ones on wheels can birng a lot more depending on the brand, age and condition. I would clean the rust off and fill in the pits with bondo. Then repaint it and ask $600 if it were mine. You can contact the safe company and give them the numbers and they will tell you how to reset the combo. I have done that a few times. There are a lot of new cheap safes at costco for $800 that size. Most are gun safes. 25 years ago I would have gotten $500 the way it sits. Things don't sell like the did back then Location and market make a difference. You can always come down in price but you can't go back up.

If you can not locate the safe company other companies might have the records. Someone has them unless lost by fire which has happened.

Man that is sweet! It puts my current "safe" to shame. I'd love to have it, but I'm in Alaska, and I move every four years or so.

$500

I feel that is fair from some of the things I have seen on Ebay and other people I have talked to.

Hey jdg,
printed your safe pictures and took them to a local safe expert, since you said you did not know the combo, he said he would not pay more than $300 for your particular safe.
For the Other Guys, Mosler, went out of business a while ago. However My safe safe guy said any good locksmith can either get the combo or reset the combo for a nominal fee, generally $100 to $150. Just thought you'd like to know.

If you want a safe, you want one that’s big and heavy, if it’s small and light a crook can just pick it up, take it home to work on at his leisure.
I’ve had several safes and as long as the doors are open it’s a relative easy matter to reset the combination, especially if you can see the wheels an amateur like me can set a new combination. Then try it without shutting the doors.
I don’t know if it’s true or not but I’ve been told that it is very difficult to insure the contents of a safe with wheels, because it is too easy to move.

On American Restoration they painted a safe gloss black with gold pin stripe, similar to Browning safes. It was super nice.

I had a friend (now deceased) who worked for Mosler Safe Company. He said his new employee training consisted of hearing, "Never lock a door closed unless you know you can open it". If you lock it open, it can be fixed. He taught himself how to reset combinations, service bank drive up tubes, etc.
