Mine are gearwrench, in the 1/4 size, the ring is pretty minor. The ring is a press fit, but can be knocked off to expose the pin. My 10mm got a loose ring, so I tacked it in two places. You could likely remove the ring, and tack the pin in place, then grind it basically flush. Sunex looks a bit thinner, snap-on basically the same as sunex.

I can't say the collar has ever been a limiting factor, on my use of the 1/4 impact universals. If I need thin, I use a chrome one to break it free, then spin that chrome universal with an electric ratchet. YMMV on lifespan of the chrome universals, doing so.

For impact, matco pinless and snap-on laser welded are the best. Cornwell and MAC are pretty slim too as they dont bother with a retaining collar for the pin.

Gearwrench has their own clone of the Matco pinless called X-core but there are a fair number of complaints with regards to material strength, or lack there of.
