motion light

i know motion lights go outside.

but since my light switch is a few feet from the door and i hit the truck before i hit the switch. i was thinking of putting a motion light up to come on when i open the man door.as i have two doors. one from the house and one to outside. the switch is located by the outside door. i also have a spare light just sitting around.


what do you all think?? has any ever done this???

There's a motion switch. It replaces the switch with a motion sensing light switch that has an override button for "off, on, and auto". You can find them at the electrical dept at the box stores.

Go for it. Especially if you already have a light that you're not using. Get light where/when you need it and don't have to buy anything. Win-win.

i have thought about that but i don't want to turn all my lights on.

like when i take the garbage out i go through the garage. so i am kinda looking for a night light so to speak of.

Almost all the lights in my shop are on motion circuits.

I put up a motion light inside my old shop for similar reasons. It worked great and I would do it again.

on my addition side I do not have power up,it's just for storage.
I had an outside light that I took down and replaced it with a motin light.
it works great for going in there to get to a car,and not having to worry about leaving on a light.

I just bought a motion sensor and switch to go with it at Lowe's yesterday, normally 44.97 and I got it for 4.05, to do the exact same thing in my garage.

My liftmaster 3800 turns the light on for me. If you are in need of a new opener its something to consider.

Before I bought those I was planning on installing a motion light not just for me, but in case someone unwanted was in there at night I could see the lights on.

I have a few battery operated LED motion lights in key points around the house & garage.
they last for ~9months on a set of rechargables and are always awaiting me at the entry door, top of the stairs, on the bathroom counter, etc..
at night I don't like alot of lights when I'm just walking around from room to room, so they provide a low non harsh amount of light if that's all I need.

Mal-wart actually has a decent selection.

there's no wiring and they're movable/positionable

I have one...works great for the cat and I before either of us hits the door.

I currently have just a lighted switch for the overhead lighting in the garage, so I can hit the right switch easily when entering through the man door. I'm planning on a motion sensor for at least one circuit near the door. I don't want all the lights to go out if I'm working under the car where the sensors don't detect my movement.

I just added a motion sensor to a closet fixture. Before the sensor it was a pull string, which I don't like, and I couldn't get a new switch in the wall easily due to wall positions and headers so I installed the motion sensor right next to the light. Open the door, light comes on, and automatically turns off 30 seconds after motion stops. Can't beat it!

My garage door opener came with a motion sensor on the wall-mount "control module." It works great - every time I open the storm door to the garage, the lights on the garage door opener automatically turn on. And if I'm in the drive way clearing snow off of my car, it picks up the movement all the way out in my driveway and keeps the lights on in the garage.

I have a few plug in strip lights. Do they make a motion sensor that I could plug a light to the into the outlet? That would be a lot better than running wire.

I have one and it works well. It is at my Man Cave, about an hour from home. When I arrive and the building is dark, I walk in the door and a light comes on. Since I am not there daily, I forget what I left to trip over when I enter.

I got one of the motion lights for outside. I mounted it on a junction box and ran a cord out of the box. I hung the box on a nail in the wall by the garage door and plugged the cord in the wall. Now when ever I open the garage door it come on. I love it. If I want to move it, no problem.

so i found a motion light that screws into a exiting socket with a motion sensor you mount below. i bought this when we moved in cause the light in the drive way was hot all the time. that's what i was talking about when i said i had one left over.

well i put it on one of my sockets i had in the garage and so far it works great. but i am out in the garage right now so we will see how it works on the day to day stuff.

I have two motion lights in the garage. They are just enough to walk through and grab something. Would not want to be without them.

That seems like a nice idea. My old hose had a Craftsman garage door opener, and it had a motion sensing wall switch that would turn that light on. I haven't seen anything similar for my current Genie unit. I may may a dedicated motion activated light when I install all my garage lighting this spring.
