Hi everyone,

I bought a 5hp air compressor by Coleman Powermate a few years ago. Now I need a motor replacement , I’m just not sure which brand to go for. By price I think this site https://www.mrosupply.com/index sells cheaper , but the question is Leeson or Weg? Maybe Baldor? I really don’t know much about this, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nathan

My friend who owns an electric motor shop says WEG stands for "World Electrical Garbage." FYI they are built in Brazil by the company that mines and smelts the iron and copper ore. You didn't hear this from me. He sells both Leeson and Baldor but more Leeson because they have a convenient distribution center nearby. I have purchased two Baldor 5 hp 1750 on ebay for around $300 with free shipping. This was less than his cost, so no hard feelings. My 5 hp compressor has a Leeson motor. That being said, if it needs replacement, it gets a Baldor.

mine had a newer 5HP one from Tractor Supply , it was a Marathon Electric , it was on the compressor that came with the house and I moved in 6/2011 and my motor just went last week , I only run my compressor once a week if that , I am currently shopping around but in my opinion I would not buy the one from Tractor Supply - heck my younger brother works there and get a 15% discount and I still wont buy that brand , I work for a utility company (power plant) and we mostly use Baldor motors , so I am prob gonna go with Baldor , again this is just my opinion - take care

I have had really good experiece with WEG for industrial applications. They tend to have a higher service factor than Baldor and Leeson

What exactly happened to the old motor? The majority of the time it's something simple like capacitor(s), centrifical switch, bearings or just cleaning. (these are easy fixes).

It's pretty rare that motor windings burn out.

WEG is a brazilian company. They dig their motors out of the ground. (Ore). They do not roll steel therefore their motors are all cast=heavy. That being said, I have one on my lathe. I would still buy a Baldor. If money was no object. If price, buy the cheapest.

If you put a WEG, Baldor, Leeson, or any other major motor manufacturer motor on your compressor (coleman powermate), it will outlast that compressor. Not bagging on your compressor, facts are facts.
