Motor Starter, Separate Control Question

I am almost done with my Quincy compressor refurb, and am looking for clarification for wiring the on/off control with my Square D Type S motor starter. My starter is class 8536, and with it is their push button kit, on/off, class 9999 sa10 ( I attached a copy of the pdf wiring bulletin). This control fits nicely in the enclosure knockout.

My question is when wiring in the on/off control, do I follow the wiring instructions for separate control? Is the separate control the pressure switch? I am no electrician, but though I would ask here to see if my conclusion is right. Thanks for your consideration.

That's not what separate control means. Separate control means with a separate control source, other than the starter itself.

You won't be able to use that start/stop station. Every time the pressure switch turns the starter off, you'd need to press the start button to start the motor back up.

The pressure switch should the only external thing controlling the starter

Somewhere on the label inside the starter or the instructions there should be a diagram for 2 wire control. This is the one you want.

For 2 wire control you need to take the holding contact out of the circuit.

Thanks so much, you saved me some serious head scratching! I'll order up the two wire control and get this project running.

This is not necessarily true, although I realize what you’re saying.

If the on/off pushbuttons the OP wants to use are not of the momentary type electrically held, but instead mechanically held and linked together then they should work fine. Just wire them in series with the pressure switch typical of a 2 wire control.

If the OP did as you say he would have to manually restart the compressor every time as AE Neuman stated.

You must have misread my post. I said IF the on/off pushbuttons were mechanically held and linked together then they would work as a typical 2 wire control.

At the time I made post #4 I hadn’t realized it was determined the pushbuttons were momentary and a 3 wire control (my bad). I should have opened the provided PDF prior to commenting. :willy_nil
