The black wire is the 110 hot. The white is the moter ground and the green is the back up ground.
When installing a switch of any kind the hot wire always goes through the switch. That would be the black wire. The white wire and green are both grounds but the withe it the ground that connects and conducts the circut back to the electric pannel, The green is a safty ground and if you are using metal boxes and conduit the box must be grounded with the green wire.
When connecting the common green ground in all boxes plastic or not they mus be crimped with a brass sleeve to meet code. You can use wire nuts on the other connections but the green wire must alays be crimped with the brass or copper sleve clip.
That is to say your motor is running off of 110v. 220 volt is just 2-110v lines. There are 2 110v leeds and post in your breaker box. The third is a ground then you have the little square steel rods with set screws. That is where you fasten your common green wires into.
You might need to rewire your motor and that should be on the inside of the plate cover or it will be on the circut board where the wire leads come form.
220 v takes less current to run.
