Motor ?????

I have an OLD sears compressor--lay down unit--i took out of a body shop several years ago and had in my garage since.
It is big- alot more quiet then my brothers oil less 60 gallon napa unit AND RESPONDS VERY WELL
A few days ago the motor decided to give up the ghost it is after all from the early 70's .

It is a DOERR 5HP--1740 RPM --230 [1 1/8" shaft size]

I took it in to my electrical shop and they said it fried the armature[ time for a new motor].
They priced a new BALDOR for $ 639.00--and a AO SMITH for $573.00.
I think they are both too high but wanted thoughts on this.
I really like my SEARS [it has done great in the old shop and in my garage for alot of years.

If you don't want to spend the money on a new one, check CL for a used motor. Shaft size will be the big factor on a replacement.

Look into having the original motor rewound. Most of the time it will be cheaper that buying a new motor. I am in Northern Illinois and I have used a shop in Rockford that rebuilds motors at a reasonable cost.

I have a old Doerr from the 70's off a old sears compressor. it's a 2HP at 3450 RPM. 230V

Does the motor need the same HP as the old one or can it be changed bigger or smaller with the same RPM rating?

If it physically will mount up, shaft matches, rotation matches, you have a large enough power supply (breaker and wires), then you can use a bigger motor.

In theory you can use a smaller motor by using a smaller pulley on the motor, this would impact the performance of the compressor as it would run slower.

Doesn't say, but that AO Smith model above is no doubt a "3450 RPM" at that price. Means you would have to cut the motor pulley size in half to maintain the present compressor head speed (and capacity). Should be OK ...........if you have 15 AMP at 230V, and you really need 5HP. Would check that about the head, just to be sure you are not looking for too much motor.

Get it rewound, that motor is probably cast iron frame and will last another lifetime. A good shop should be able to rewind it for half the cost of equivalent motor. Just like tools, cheap motors are junk from China. Yes a China motor would be about the cost of rewind, but only expect it to last a year or two. A good USA motor would cost three times the price of a China motor.
