I have new wish/project to add to my never-ending list. A previous owner cut a pair of back to back "cabinets" into the walls from either side of the space above my basement stairwell. Not a bad idea, but it's position in the stairwell makes it a real headbanger. Our upcoming reno will eliminate the need for the cabinets in the two adjoining rooms, but I got to thinking about all that space above the stairs. What about a pair of really big, long drawer slides, or even a simple angle iron track/ball bearing setup? I could build a cabinet over the stairwell, and pull it out to the top landing to access it. No sketchy ladder setups or stretching and reaching. I will be able to reposition the whole getup so I don't have to bump my big ole' melon on it anymore going down the stairs!
Now, if it could be POWERED, that'd be the bee's knees! I've looked around a bit, and Blum for example has a system, but it really doesn't look like it's tailored to what I would need. I'm not very well educated on linear motion systems, other than building a few RV slide-out systems. That would work, but may be a little bit of overkill. lol
Guessing the travel will need to be about 4', maybe more. The fabrication is pretty basic, just need to a slick way to operate it, that we will still be able to use when we're older.
Anyone ever think about something like this?
