Motot on saw-- problems

Had a couple of projects today; flipped the switch on the table saw and ripped a sheet of plywood; and shut it off. Back on to size a couple of boards--worked great. Ready to cut some boards to length; turned saw on--all I got was a loud buzz. Each time I turned it on, all it does is buzz. Blade turns freely and pulley spins freely on motor shaft. Noticed a couple of times when I turn it on, the pulley turns backward for a fraction of an inch; and all it does is buzz.

Sears 113 motor, 1hp, 3450, ball bearing, wired on 110. Any ideas as to problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My guess would be the capacitor(s) needs replacement. You may have a cap for starting and running.

A problem with woodworking machinery is sawdust getting inside the motor and finding its way into the centrifugal start switch contacts. A quick check is to remove the belt from the machine, give the motor a good spin in the normal direction (wrap some string around the pulley and give it a pull) then hit the power switch. If the motor runs normally, shut it back off and try starting it without the pre-spin. Chances are it might work, if the problem was dust in the contacts. If not, or is the motor will not start or the RPMs go up and down (from running on the start winding alone), some inestigation is needed. Most often it is a bad start cap, poor connections on the wiring, or a bound up centrifugal switch.
