Well I started my garage build this weekend..:rocker:.. but might be getting cold feet on painting the stripe I was planning on. It's a single car garage, top 1/2 will be red all around, bottom 1/2 gray. Has anyone used molding vs painting a stripe? Any pics? I just don't see the return on the additional work vs buy molding, paint it black, nail / glue to wall.

Or convince me otherwise :D

Do paint. It's cheaper and easier.

And....if you decide to hang something on the wall, molding would be in the way...paint won't

In a garage I'd paint it. Or I've thought about trying a vinyl strip with width you want. My BIL just bought a vinyl plotter so might see what he thinks.

I decided to go with the painting... I got some of that frog tape to help out.

Wuaname, if you're going to paint the stripe there's a trick to keeping the lines nice and crisp. Even with frog tape, there will be seepage. Try this:

1) paint the background colour(s) as normal.
2) tape off the lines for your stripe (laser level if you have one)
3) start by painting the stripe area again with the background colour (or colours if you have a different colour top and bottom... just use the colour that will be next to the stripe on that side). Let dry.
4) now go ahead and paint your stripe like you would normally.
5) carefully peel off the tape, and you should have a nice crisp line!

Step 3 is the key. By painting with the background colour first, it means any paint that leaks under the tape is the same colour as the wall. Then that dries and the tape is fully sealed. When you paint your stripe overtop, it should be pretty near perfect.

Do a search for "stripe paint technique" or something on here if that isn't clear, I think there might be an example with pics somewhere.

Edit: Here ya go... pics to illustrate.
