Sure would be nice to have a 1" deep pancake box to mount on the sheathing (for stucco jobs that have that luxury) so it was only necessary to drill a 3/4 hole for the wire through the sheathing. Less to flash that way as opposed to cutting out a big 3.5" hole for a through the wall box. The stucco seems to be about 1" deep.
And yet, this product does not appear to exist! I see new houses being built and they just nail a 1/2" deep pancake box on the house for the exterior lights. This happens a lot on the garage where they can't go through a strong wall, for example. This, of course, is substandard installation as the stucco just oozes all over the box and the finish surface is 1/2 inch or more beyond the box.
On a siding house this is not an issue because you would use a mounting block to house your 1.5 inch deep box and just come through the sheathing with the wire. Caulk around the wire and you have pretty good water protection. Nice job and to code.
Stucco seems to present a problem because there are situations were you can't or don't want to cut box sized holes through the underlying substrate and the pancakes are not deep enough to properly surface mount.
What gives? I have searched and believe that a solution to this very common issue does not exist!
