Mounting a Mr Cool Mini Split

Hello and sorry if this has been asked before. I've tried searching and had no luck.

I'm looking to buy a 36k mini split to heat/cool my 30x40x12 shop. It is fully insullated with 3" fiberglass insulation all the way around with one window, two normal doors, and one 10'x10' insulated overhead door. There are no walls framed out so it's just the metal framing (at 8' high I think with just the 4 corners and middle having uprights).

My question is, how would I mount the blower, or even the outdoor unit if I wanted to keep it off the ground, to the walls? Do I need to have a plywood stringer mounted to it or something?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If it ever gets cold in AR this year I'd like to be ready for it.

Thank you in advance!

It's pretty easy to find the installation manual for the unit you're buying and it will probably answer your questions.

You can probably find it here. https://mrcool.com/documentation/

I built mounts for the outside unit and screwed it to the wall but it does make an unpleasant noise on the inside so if you do this make sure it's not an area where you'll be spending time.

Thank you for the suggestion.. the installation manual doesn't have a special note for mounting to a metal sidewall with only insulation on the inside.

I mounted my first minisplit on the side of the house welded up some angle iron and got rubber isolation blocks there is still a little compressor resonance depending on compressor speed I made sure I had timberlock screws hitting the studs.

My second I am installing this week I poured concrete and welded a frame for it to sit on high above our usual snow fall to eliminate wall resonance.

I have Pioneer units.

Don't mount the outdoor unit to the house with wall brackets. The small, steady vibrations will drive you nuts. Free standing on a concrete pad.

Ditto. I'm thinking about re-mounting the unit I put on my barn this fall. I hung the outdoor unit off of the wall, and it does make noise. The ones I put in our house are mounted to the wall, but the walls are concrete, so no vibration.

The bonus room over my shop was too high to mount the outdoor unit to a pad and I did not want to leave it sitting on the entrance deck. So I fabricobbled an extension off the side. I through bolted the 2x4s to another 2x4 that spans three joists in the platform. Added a few knee braces and cross braces. Put a piece of rubber between the vertical 2x4s and the ones the unit is mounted to and then the isolation pads that came with the unit. The double pads seem to have eliminated almost all vibration getting transferred into the shop.

I initially ran the AC w/ the outdoor unit on the deck and it sounded like someone was cutting the grass outside when running and no isolation pads.

Hoping the support holds up, it held me and seems to be sturdy enough. I can always replace w/ metal if needed. The wood was drops from the recent deck build.

I disagree . I've got a 1 ton mini split wall mounted on my shop , I rarely even hear or sense it running . A 3 ton unit could be a different story , I 'll concede . I wanted my unit up off the ground- away from grass, leaves , etc. What is the construction type , pole barn , stick built , all metal . can you reinforce your mounting spot?

You can disagree all you want. I'm talking from experience. Mine is 24K btu.

Thanks for the input! Where is the best place to buy the MrCool mini splits?
I purchased form Costco but I see they are already $200 more than they were last summer.

I see no one really answered your question about mounting the outside unit. If you want it high and out of the way you may have to attach some kind of structure that is attached to the bottom and top of the steel framing, angle iron would probably work. Then attach the brackets to it. Remember you get 25' of line set that you can't cut if you're doing a DIY unit.

You could also straddle one of the posts in the middle of the wall.

About 3 weeks ago I mounted and installed a Mr. Cool DIY 24k unit in my new 20x40 with 12" walls and 18" peak. The hardest part was lifting the Compressor up to the mounts. I can't hear it through the metal with 2" of closed cell spayed on.
It is a really neat unit. The WiFi and the App are phenomenal. In heat mode it only goes to 62* But you can use the "Comfy Temp" setting and have it just turn off when the temp is 54* and back on when the temp drops to 48* Last week when it got cold at night it was on for a total of 1.5 hours.
Used their mount for outside and mounted the head unit to the face of the loft.
(fyi, the inside is not complete.)
I got mine from Tyler here. They dropped shipped it instead of me driving 1 hour to get it at their Nashville warehouse.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I’ll check their site out. Sounds like our shops are very similar but mine is a little wider. Does the 24k handle it pretty well? Debating on it or the 36k.

ToysRus-That shop looks great but it hurts to look at that pic. I took a fall two years ago at that height onto my concrete shop floor. Be safe.

Thanks again for the info. I went ahead and grabbed the 36k unit from that website. Ended up saving me 300-400 on shipping/tax. Will post some pictures on how I mount everything.

Is your building a "red iron" steel building, with girts to support the steel sheathing? If so, I would hope that there is more than just the top and bottom channel to support the steel. Also, what kind of insulation? Spray foam? Batts? It might make a difference.

I installed a couple of Boreal (made by Gree) 24,000btu units on my steel building, which is insulated with 8" of rockwool batts, and you can barely hear the compressor units cycle on and off from inside. I welded up some brackets that I screwed to the bottom channel and the first girt (about 44" from the slab). The brackets are mounted directly to the building, and my condenser units sit on rubber isolation something like these: https://www.grainger.com/product/GRAINGER-APPROVED-Cylindrical-Vibration-Isolator-2NPD6.

Of course, it depends on your sensitivity to noise, but to me it's just background. It doesn't cause rattles or anything like that.

It's not done yet. The lift for the stairs was finished tonight and it has a handrail on the right. I'll be putting up a 2x4 handrail in the loft at some point when I have time.

You are very welcome. Didn't see your question till tonight. It's only been installed since Dec 22nd.🤷‍♂️ All I can tell you is this is how much it has run to keep the building in the 50's. (remember it was warm most of the days.) I think the 36k will be just peachy. Comfy Temp setting is awesome. I find I dont really use the wireless thermostat much. I use the phone app mostly or the remote.

Yes it is a red iron building. It has a girt at I think 8 feet and then the top rail at 12 feet. The insulation is 3 inch thick fiberglass rolls with the white backing.

Awesome, thanks again for the info. I hope it's not overkill, but it looks like I won't be to cold or to hot either way haha.

I will disagree too, if i remember correctly you have an older unit? The new units out there today are much quieter and do not fibrate the wall. Also they have rubber grommets to add on the bracket to allow for some absorption of startup.
I have lots of customers with in the last 3 years put them on the wall with no vibrating issues. or noise complaints. Even a couple have them on the bedroom outside wall.

I will be putting one on my wall also.
