I was lucky enough to find a vintage Reed vise and have spent the last few weeks getting it in shape to use. It was in pretty good shape and had much of its original japan black finish. It looks like late 1930's or 1940's vintage. My goal was to retain its original look as much as possible. So yesterday I made the mount for it. My many moves and subsequent shop reconfigurations have made me unwilling to commit to a permanent bench mounted vise. Rather I like to mount them on a base that can be relocated when the situation arises. Anyway, here is the base.
I glued together two sections of 2x6 and topped it with a scrap of 1/4" plywood. Then I drilled holes and countersinks for the 3/8" bolts.
The trial fit looked good.
I needed a container for the hardware.
I used a handscrew to hold the static jaw in place for mounting.
It seemed like a good time to smear on some highlight paint.
I used the same handscrew to hold the dynamic jaw so I could install the innards.
On my first try, I got the split washer too tight and the leadscrew was not happy. Oh, and I also tried to insert the set screw into the oil hole. In my defense, it was 100+ in my shop and the brain was overheating. Those issues were corrected and here is the money shot.
For you engineers keeping score at home, please do not fret. I have the mounting board screwed to the bench top for shear only. I later added a C clamp at the rear to prevent a big upset.
