Mounting air reel sideways...

I have some lincoln 1/2" hose reels that are probably 26" in diameter. I'd like to mount them on my ceiling but I'm a bit worried about headroom.

I cannot mount them above the ceiling sheathing.

Anyone have theirs mounted this way and noticed any long term effects?

The pull direction is not as good as if the fairlead is mounted down, but I could live with that to not feel like I'm going to hit my head on it.

In theory, it should work well. In practice, my vertical reels sometimes lock up as I'm respooling onto them. If they were horizontal, that could allow the hose or wire to fall off the side and jam them up.

Maybe if there was some sort of guard that keeps the line from falling off the reel.

No, there's none of Jack's signature green in the pictures. But you made me think. So I did a google image search, and did still end up back on this site:

Isn't it going to return most of the hose to the bottom of the spool? Not sure if it is a problem or not , for 50ft you may be able to get away with it.

Updating this. I decided not to mount the hose reels sideways. I put one vertically under a bench, another tucked next to an ibeam, then got a smaller one for for the middle of the ceiling above the lift.

Got a small 1/4" reelcraft for the lift area. Behind the ibeam is the other large one. I did some testing with it sideways and occasionally it would rewind a bit funky.

As a response to the OP I had one mounted horizontal for about 5 years and it was never a problem

Updating this. I decided not to mount the hose reels sideways. I put one vertically under a bench, another tucked next to an ibeam, then got a smaller one for for the middle of the ceiling above the lift.

This one is under the bench

I did the same thing except rotated the arm up so I don't have to bend over to reach the air hose.
