I'm wanting to mount something like the Gladiator cleat system between the 6x6 posts on my pole barn. Can I run some vertical 2x4 on 16" or 24" centers on the girt boards and then screw the cleat system to the 2x4's?

I did something similar to hang my weedeaters and it seems plenty strong. I'll be hanging lawn chairs, kids toys, maybe garden tools or more unusual items that won't fit on my pegboards. I screwed directly to the 6x6 for mounting my Bora hangers my long 2x material but I want these cleats to sit inside the 6x6 posts.

I'm not a framer nor do I have a pole barn yet but I do have an opinion:)
Why not? I would think that putting them on edge or 1 1/2 side screw to your grits will give you more strength than laying them flat against grit boards. Laying them flat over time and weight may cause grit boards to bow outward. But that would take yrs may not be problem at all.

You can attach whatever you want to the girt boards as long as whatever it is doesn't overload them. Looks like they are 2x4. so no worries on the cabinets you're looking at creating an issue.

They're actually 2x6.

IMHO, French Cleats and French Frys are competing for the two best things to come from France in recent years.
