Mounting flag on house. Brick vs mortar?

So I'm finally getting around to hanging a flag on the house. I realize I'm probably over thinking this but I'm curious to see what the collective opinion is on anchoring the bracket into brick vs mortar. The house is 25 years old but the brick is in good shape.

The pole is 6' and the flag is 3' x 5'. The house faces east so the front is exposed to prevailing winds all year long. However the flag will probably only be flown on flag days.

So for the folks who know brick or who have practical experience what's the best plan, drill into the brick or the mortar?

The brick is going to be stronger....but, should you decide to remove the flag, harder to repair. If into the mortar, easier to repair....but I'd use a longer anchor....

Just remember, the bricks on your house are not a primary structural element....they are just a great long term house covering.

Mortar is supposed to be softer than the brick. It's also supposed to be less brittle. Of course, reality doesn't always follow "supposed to's"

Anyway, I went with anchors in the mortar. The holes are easier to cover up at a later time than drilling the brick. Of course, if your mortar is in bad shape and in need of repointing, then it might not hold an anchor, but then again, if your mortar is bad, I wouldn't trust a pole on the brick either.

Think about mounting a plaque with lots of glue in addition to anchors into the joints
Then mount the pole holder to the wood

20' flag pole in the yard, easier all the way around. Plus it gives the wife one more place to plant flowers.
