Mounting Garage Opener on Ceiling

When you guys installed your garage door openers on ceiling, was it before or after Sheetrock? Any pros and/or cons to installing before or after Sheetrock?

After sheetrock.
It should make replacing the opener easier in a few years.

It's not necessary to brace the unit to the ceiling joists? just thru Sheetrock and into the strapping will be fine?

You drill a hole through the sheetrock and into the bottom of the joist and lag bolt it. that's what I did, anyway.

you definitely want to mount the unit to the under side of the joists or to blocking between the joints, drywall would never hold it
