Our 2 car garage has cinder block walls and I'd like to put one something up to hang garden tools from and stuff that just that takes up space on a shelf. But I've never worked with cinder block walls.

Can someone point me in the right direction please.

I had a brain fart, I meant peg board.

I'd tap con a 2x4 frame on to the wall and attach the pegboard to the frame.

The frame will give the gap you need behind the pegboard for the hooks.

I thought you couldn't use tap cons into cinder block. It appears that "cinder blocks" aren't widely used anymore and instead what are used are concrete masonry units. Which is probably what I have since the house was built 10 years ago. I guess I just don't trust the blocks

As Nuttsgt stated - you can use tapcons in cinder block, I have done it many, many times. Just make sure you use the correct size pilot bit and do not over torque the tapcons. Larger diameter shank tapcons have lower probability of twisting off or stripping out.

There are many different anchoring systems for block or concrete, if you don't like the tapcon approach - just Google concrete anchoring.

I also think you are well advised to mount a 2x4 frame of sorts as it will give you flexibility - maybe you want to mount brackets for lawn tools in one area, pegboard in another and maybe a few shelves in another. It will require far less drilling into the block if you attach the 2x4 flat on the wall as a starting point.

You could also consider using construction adhesive along with the anchors you choose for added strength, but only if you are certain you will never be removing it.

Good Luck

my place is concrete block, yeah consider 2 rows of 1 bys, then slat or peg screwed to that. Just saves you in the long run if you like to rearrange from having 100 holes in the blocks....i find looking at certain stuff on the walls can drive me nuts. 10 year ago i lined with slat wall and have probably rearranged it 100 times.

tap cons work fine, use an impact driver if you have one ****tons*** easier and less breakage (predrill of course).

I was thinking of a 2x4 frame. Ill look into the stuff you guys suggested. I have a 1/2" impact (electric) but that might not be the right tool for the job

They have masonry screws.very strong and simple. Also lead and plastic anchor inserts that expand when you insert the screws. Liquid nails also makes a masonry adhesive if i remember correctly.

I hope they hold. . . .

Honestly, if the tapcons strips out when tightened, I drill a new hole and put another tapcon in it, other than that I've had good luck with them.

I've used a hammer drill with a IIRC 3/16" concrete bit. Drill right thru the 2x4 into the concrete. Place two or three pieces of 6" long tie wire into the hole and bend over the last 1/2". Then pound in a regular 3 1/2" nail. This will hold to a ceiling if enough nails are used. On a wall I use 4 or 5 nails per 8' board. You can also use wood screws if you want to remove later.
Edit; you could also mount the wall board directly if needed.

Tapcons or toggles, either work. My wall is block, and I just tap con-ed a 2x4 frame, then screwed my pegboard into the frame....I have a TON of stuff hanging on it, including every single 18v Dewalt tool I own and all of the batteries and charger...no problems at all....
