Mounting Hose Reels

Our shop is built with the trusses on 8' centers. I have 4 electrical cord reels and 3 70' air hose reels that I would like to hang. What would be the best way of making sure they are securely mounted? or should I just mount them to the walls. I like the overhead idea because it is easier to manuever around equipment and out of the way, but I need them mounted securely enough for a constant use environment. They are all reelcraft reels and are heavy.

I was thinking of painting a board and running it between two trusses, but do not know if there are any other better ideas.

Thanks.

Here is an old picture of the shop to give an idea of what I am trying to work with.

I would crawl in the attic and mount a board between the joists for backing. Basically what you said but in the attic so you don't see it.

How about a simple I beam, maybe 4" tall running the length of the middle? Or a couple going across? If you supply them with a coiled cord from a fixed point, they could possibly roll along using a trolley setup.

Could do one for air and another for power on the same rail using coiled supply cords to the trolley arrangement.

The issue is that the attic is very deep with insulation to the point I do not think I would want to attempt to put the boards in behind the ceiling panels.

I'd use Unistrut for that. Bolt a couple of 10' pieces parallel to each other, about a foot apart, then you can either bolt the reels directly to the strut (with their special nuts), or bolt small 2ft x 2ft pieces of plywood to the strut and mount the reels on that.

Once you get the strut mounted to the ceiling, it is easily reconfigured to whatever you want after that. Approx $20 for a 10ft section of strut at HD. You can get 20ft sections at plumbing/electrical suppliers. HD has a fair selection of brackets and special unistrut nuts available.

Any time you want to hang something overhead, think of unistrut. That is exactly what it is designed for. It works well with threaded rod, too, if that would help in your design (think of suspending a level platform below the ceiling...probably not useful for the reels, but can be useful for hanging HVAC, etc. in a building like yours)

Here's some strut I used in my shop...

I completely forgot about unistrut. we have a bunch up in the storage shed. I think it should work out fine and look much better.

different versions, screw to wall at working height so they are easy to service. Equipment in ceiling is difficult.

I never have to service them is the thing and have means to reach if needed. The thing I do not like about wall mounted ones is navigation around things in the shop, a lot easier when they are in the air.

I've got my hose reel mounted to the wall @8ft up and have about 3ft of hose hanging out. Whenever I let the hose wind up too fast the quick connect bangs the hell out of my welder which is mounted below the reel. I'd hang mine from the ceiling if done again.

I keep forgetting all about Unistrut. I should get some of that to just keep on hand in the garage. I already have some ideas for it.

I vote for the Unistrut instead of boards. Two pieces bolted to the trusses at each hanging location, then bolt the reels to the Unistrut.

Thanks guys I decided on the unistrut and the guy helping me agreed, we are going to get them put up and just run extension cords to the garage door boxes and the lift recip. The hose reels will be thrown up there too to make sure that everything is solid enough. I won't plumb them yet though. Going to make sure the positioning works out and then we will plumb the hose reels and run wires to the cord reels. This way we don't end up being stuck with them in places that turn out to be less than ideal.

Dang caryS, except for the Romex wire (I used conduit), I did pretty much the same thing you did with your setup including the drop light reel.

Good job!

bumping up an older thread. Does anyone have pictures of how you mounted your hose / power reels in your garage? I liked the attic idea, but it won't work in my application.

I've put one overhead power reel over the bay with the MaxJax lift. The air line reel is mounted on the post between the garage doors. So far this has been more than suitable for my needs, but as I redo the air and wall surfaces, I will likely add more locations.

I just ended up mounting them to the wall, it was easiest and with enough reels around the shop we can reach whatever is needed without worrying about stuff being in the way, plus we don't waste a lot of hose due to 18' cieling and dont have hose drops in the way.

Heres a couple pictures, theres more reels on the opposite sides of the shop as well, a couple I mounted on the corners of our loft on swivel brackets.

I agree, that looks good. One guy here said,,, if I had to do it again,,, that happens with air and I have outright moved a few pieces where it made it more convenient. You have floor space enough to draw hose off the reel for outdoor and could put a port with roller that fed outside for use when the doors are closed.
I have one outside that could and should be reworked, its been there a long time.

I like the reel in the attic with port, that's got some imagination.

I see some nice layout in the pics above, mine is similar but where the torches are I have hot washer and have a welding bay that can be had from a side door in fair weather. I really pull up on top of my infrastructure.
I get extremely deliberate on how I approach events or projects especially if they are routine/seasonal/hi cycle or aggravating.

I was sitting here contemplating the value of more loft space now, you got great possibility over your entrance. You got what you got but I tend to move that box a little, add a hutch for phone and a sink for hand wash along that wall. My office is off that wall but I can see how that is a traffic hub especially with doors closed. I like these kinds of facilities. They are very similar with similar layouts, I have seen plans where they didn't get the entrance right and it really puts an ******* in to the movement of men.

Really old pics but the layout is similar

The door on left is entrance and a large roll up past it to the left. In the winter the traffic enters shop first and my office is there. Whoops, second pic is more descriptive. I need to draw a floor plan.

Our office/bathroom/compressor &tool room are underneath the loft in the back of the shop. Been in some shops with them up front and did not like it. Rather have the width up front where most things come in than in back.

We don't run the farm or anything out of the office, just used for shop stuff. Not being up front isnt a huge deal. I like having the loft open, but at the same time don't like how dirty everything gets up there.

Here's some older pictures that kind of show the layout.

Sometimes there is no more space but in durally's pic my ideal would to be a sercice cart generally sits where someone dumped the items in the door, move the big box to right of window, laundry tub unser window and some modified shelves leading back to catchall at the entrance door.
The service cart would get the hi cycle things tended to be needed for inside and outside while reducing the walk on the inside. The air and electric and the air were good additions here and worthy of the effort. I can see this being a pretty easy place to work in.

I see some shops with 3 bays wide but I suspect the center quickly fills up. I like your setup with car hoist at the back. Its not a deal to drive thru the building, its better. The place isn't a quick lube but general maintenance shop. I remember you posting the barrel rack, I like these overalls.
Someone did a pretty good job with this design, this ranks up there with better ones I have seen here. There have been more expensive but not much better.
I see the side door location now from better pics... poster case should be worth a look to anyone building a shop. I got side door, I can but didn't use it all winter. I just don't need it but in summer its beautiful with door open. I didn't have man door there and don't regret it, one door open even in chilly days is still nice.

I look some closer, like where the red box sits. Is that a hot hi pressure washer sitting there?

I have my office bathroom up front corner, I have seen this done both ways. I got the coffee clutch there and my traffic flow is about as good as it gets. My guess that who designed the shop in pics above had done it before though.

The blue box is the shop/farm tools. A lot of people coming the door to grab them. Red box is next to window with metric tools as well as some specialty tools that are used less. Trash can usually sits next to toolbox but hasn't been moved back since the last party.

I would like to rearrange that wall someday though, but right now its lower on the list than some other priorities. Some of the guys have their own carts/boxes they use for around the shop. The bigger snap-on box in the later pictures is mine.

The air is nice to have, the electric is very nice because extension cords always disappear, especially in the winter. Cord reels do not. Adding a few more as needed also. Would like to add a nice roller passthrough for each set of reels. Really would like one for the DEF, but that has to be large enough to fit the entire nozzle, needs a switch for pump and still needs to be able to deal with our winters.

We have a doggy door between walk in and overhead door that gets used for running air hoses outside when needed.

Thanks for the compliments.

Too much space can be an issue, theres day we wish we had more but with no extra people working it would just fill up with more stuff, keeping it smaller keeps projects moving in and out.

A drive through semi bay would have been nice but its not bad without it. We couldn't do drive through because of where we built it, too close to other buildings. It was where we needed/wanted it though. Wanted it in the middle of the farm and thats where it worked out. Its 60x80 so theres enough room for a semi with one of our trailers to fit inside with hood open, even the sleeper semi and still have room behind it. A 53' van and longer semi do not fit as well though. Our trailers are 40-45'

The lift in the corner is nice because its out of the way. It usually has something on it though anyways. The only thing we did wrong was put it too close to loft. When we built the wall for office the lift ended up tight to it. Not a big deal though. Its a little too close to loft on the other side also. I usually back trucks onto it so I have more room to work in front of the truck, with some trucks they will hit the loft when positioned right on the lift. Not a huge deal, just turn them around and they are fine.

The side door is nice to pull small stuff in, or when front doors are blocked. It's nice if we can leave it open to work, but we usually have the doors closed. In Wisconsin it goes from needing the heater on to needing the A/C with nothing in between. The Nice days in between are always too windy/dusty to have the doors open.

Being a dairy, we park a lot of stuff inside daily during colder months. That is related to the one major thing I would change with this shop. More floor drains. We only did the one up front and left the back half of shop level for projects. Bad idea, wet vehicles on lift drain to right behind my red toolbox, stuff to the other side drains there as well. As you can see that is where long term projects and/or junk sits so its really annoying having a pool of water there. Floor heat helps keep things dry but cant keep up to that much water. I like the drain in front, but would put one running the length of the shop down the middle as well with everything sloped to it. We don't "layout" anything on the floor anyways. It was something we heard a lot of people think was important when they built their shops, most don't have the volume of snow covered vehicles inside that we do though. I use some portable dikes to channel the water when needed and squeegee a lot.

We actually designed it ourselves after looking at a lot of other shops. Saving a lot of pictures, and making a lot of notes. After a few years of ideas we built it. Aside from the drains the one other thing I'd do is just make the loft run the full length on the one side and then run a gantry crane between there and the opposite wall. Would need bi-fold doors for this to work but after working in shops with them I wish we had them built in. Portable ones work fine though too just not as convenient and they take up more space.

The oil rack was built and designed by our oil company. I told them what I wanted and how I wanted it, they made it all work and did a beautiful job. Works great, takes up very little space, no messes anymore and everyone is happy.

Heres a few more pictures, some very old, that show more of the layout. First one is aerial pic. Its our only crooked building and that was intentional to make it easier to back semis in.

These pictures are very old, from the first year we had it.

The spot where the saw, bench grinder, drill press and hose making equipment is located is going to have a steel rack there instead. I'm moving the hose making stuff upstairs. We make a lot of hoses but it doesn't need to be downstairs in the way. Bandsaw will stay where its at. Welding table we got cheap, too heavy to move so it stays parked where its at. Its out of the way, but near the rest of the metal working stuff.

Oil setup you mentioned. May add dispensers for the common stuff someday.

Waste oil and DEF reel along with waste oil burner that heats floor. Waste oil is pumped to tank from sink under spigots. DEF tank is near oil rack and pumps to reel.

Old shop was a converted corn crib.

I have only 1 or 2 minor issues with drains but it was something I wanted, we have winter too and I hate working on wet stuff. I can park 3 or 4 wet cas no problem. If I want them dry usually pressure wash hot before they come in and dry over night and then move to hoist. Mine isn't in the way either, I don't use it a lot but the location is super.
I also try to move stuff thru, don't like facing the same stuff every day and the object for me is an empty shop.
I would have added a couple trim options, some other minor things but was super stressed when I did it.

That reel in the attic is a good trick. But, if that's an HF reel that hose will go south pretty quick. The hose in my reel lasted 2 years before developing explosive pin holes. I just replaced it.

Interesting this thread appears since I just did a creative mounting of mine last weekend in my home garage with a very low ceiling.
I've got 7' 11" Sheetrock ceilings and two lift up doors on the typical runners. I mounted mine between the door runners about 1' from the doors/wall. But the tricky part was where I cut out the Sheetrock, placed a 2X10 between the above floor joists and braced them in place. Of course I used lots of screws and construction adhesive too. Bracing under the 2X10 also, and then sheet rocked the opening up to seal the area.
My hose end hangs down about 3' by the wall.
My only concern is if someone lets go of it and it slaps my '66 Mustang sitting next to it. I have instructed everyone how to use it properly, but I might lower the hose length to the floor so it won't whip if some idiot lets go of it.
