Mounting large objects on walls...need advice

I just picked up a 50ft air hose and reel set, but dont know the proper way to mount it on my wall.

It's pretty beefy and has 4 holes for 1/2" bolts. How would you mount this up?

I have a similar hose reel. I cut through the dry-wall in the garage and put up a 2x6 across two studs then lag screwed the reel to the 2x6.

What kind of wall? If it is a regular stick stud 16" OC I would screw a 1x4 or 6 between two studs and then screw the reel to the 1x.
