Mounting rollers permanently

I'm thinking of mounting one of my roller tool boxes permanently, but I have a question about how to do it.

1. Should I remove the wheels and build a frame underneath the cabinet so that the weight is being supported by the bottom of the cabinet or

2. should I remove the wheels and just set the cabinet flat on the floor, perhaps on 1/2 inch plywood?

Does it matter?

you will lose the air space underneath and invite rust. keep the painted undersurface off the ground.

I put mine on a 2x4 I'd trimmed down -- as z28toz06 note, you want some air to circulate. At the same time, it's nice to have enough wood to keep dust and fasteners and stuff like that from getting underneath the thing.

This isn't a great picture, but both the stack and the wider unit are permanently installed.

I have my Snap On "installed" in a bench.
I took the wheels off, more so it didn't move around inside the bench. It's tight in there but I have made it so the side opens & the box can pulled out. There is enough space that the box has room all around it so it could move a bit with the wheels on it. I also did put it up on 2 pieces of 4x4 to keep it off the cement floor. This was done more to keep the box at a "normal" height & I didn't think about it then but the air circulation is another good reason.

I like the results so far, but I'm thinking about putting cupboard type doors on for both looks & security (out of site out of mind, it faces out the car doors)

Could you make a disappearing door that opens then just slides in beside the box? Or is there room to the side for a sliding door? Otherwise the open cabinet door would be a PITA to get around when you are working. One knee into the door would leave you turning the air blue.

EDIT- Forget the sliding door, your picture would not load earlier. I see you have drawers to the right.

I like the built-in look. And I think the doors would be a good idea, but I'm with Torque1st on making them concealed. I know I'd whack my knees if I had the chance.

I'd either have a frame under it, I wouldn't want the plywood directly on the floor. If you do take the casters off, don't throw them away. Stick them in an out of the way area.

I have my wheels sitting on top of the box itself. Safely built in to the bench so I can't loose them.

Another option is to use composite wood since it will not wick moisture.

I'd say get a piece of material, hang it on a dowel rod, put two j hooks to hang dowel rod on or find a simple way to hang material/small sheet to cover box.
Material would be easy to remove store and still cover/hide box.

LOL! No, I'll keep the wheels. I've changed the shop layout too often to throw them away. There's also a chance that we'll be moving to Michigan when I retire, so I'd be taking the chest with me.

How about just making 2 wood blocks an eigth of an inch higher than the wheels and sliding them under the box? The box would be off the wheels, the wheels wont get lost and you wouldn't have to empty/tip over the box to remove them.

I would make a frame so you ended up with a toekick on the plus side it would keep dust and tiny parts from rolling under it also
