mounting subpanel

I'm wiring my 3rd garage and mounting my subpanel. I thought I would take a couple knockouts out of the side of the panel as I'm putting it in and drill holes in the studs on either side so I coule bring some romex in through the sides and maybe keep from such a cluster on the top. Is it all right to drill 3 3/4" holes relatively close together in a stud? It is a 2x4 stud. It's not a load bearing stud. Would I need to put plastic inserts in? One hole will be closer to the garage side of the stud then the middle. I could put a nail plate there. Going up the wall can I nail to the sheathing or should I stay on a stud?

3 holes are no problem as long as the outer edge of any hole is no closer than 1.25" to the nailing face of the stud. You will need to use a bushing or romex button connector/clamp in the knockout hole of the panel. Stay to the center of the side of the stud to fasten the wire.

I think the one hole will be. Even if I use a nail plate it's not good. Of the other two one is pretty much in the center and the other one is closer to he outside wall which is all ready sided. When I run the romex up the wall between studs can I nail it to the sheating or do I need to stay on a stud?

You can always run wire down the adjoining bay, through a slot and then into the bottom of the panel.

If you use a nail plate you will be fine as far as the distance off the stud. It's just so a Sheetrock screw doesn't go into it.
