I'm installing a new garage door and I previously dry walled over the header. The jambs are still exposed. Will I be able to install the bars center support on top of the drywall if the lag bolt is long enough to grab into the header?

^^^^^^^ If it was me, I'd simply cut a 3"x5" hole into the drywall so that the center support comes in direct contact to the header. Otherwise the drywall will eventually crush & crumble under the mounting bracket due to the vibration.

As sammerdog said the brackets need to go against a wood surface.
when i drywalled my garage i asked the door guy what to do in the door mounting area and he said he would not mount over drywall.

Thanks, I'll cut out the drywall where I need to mount the support.

That's what I was thinking of doing. Luckily, I just finished drywalling and still haven't got around to painting, just been to hot and humid here in coastal N. Carolina lately.
