Hi Guys,
I have been trouble for years with mice chewing their way through my overhead garage door seals and just witnessed my buddy Gorilla taping one of his. Suddenly I had an epiphany: why couldn't I pop rivet some steel or aluminum to the bottom, covering the rubber seal (spaced up a little to prevent bottoming out on the concrete during closure)? Has anyone here dealt with this? Am I on the right track?

That should work fine. That's what I would probably do. Leave less than 1/4" clearance at the bottom; the closer the better.

Two houses ago we had a persistant family of mice chewing on the lower4 inches of the garage door seal, a small piece of aluminum sandwiched between the seal and the exterior of the seal, held in place with white duct tape stopped them in the tracks. Sticky traps inside of this area, along with some mice kill made short work of those that were trapped in the garage afterwards.

I had a 4" section of door seal that was missing for some reason, so I put a piece of steel wool there. It worked, except it rusted. I've since changed the seal. If you are going to put a piece of metal on the door, close the door, then mount your metal so it's close to the floor. That way the seal will be compressed.

On amazon they sell a roll of copper "mesh" for bird proofing without the rust issue. Also I'd consider scotch brite. I have no idea if it rusts or not :) but I can't say I've ever seen a rusted piece either. The last seals I put in were sort of an I-beam shape, very tall with super short flanges, but when changing it, it would be easy to install "something else" to prevent chewing.

Google "garage door rodent seal" and you'll find lots of products already made for this. No need to re-invent the wheel.
