My wife and I have been planning this move for quite awhile. Sold the big house, with the big garage/basement and moved cross country to half the house, no basement or garage, but a small 10x16 shed. We got rid of a ton of stuff, but as I sit here surrounded by my gear...still sitting i the yard, I can't believe how much I have to go. Fortunately my daughter is only a couple miles away and has offered the use of her garage, but this really stinks.

One good thing is my wife is now insistng I build a garage, well, after I re-do the bathrooms, kitchen, etc. All you can do is laugh at it, or you'd go nuts. On the bright side, I've got great stuff:thumbup:

Congrats on the move!

I like the way your wife thinks. To keep her happy, start the bathrooms next week and the kitchen on September.

By January, you should be on to the garage!

Good Luck

I'd tell her you need to get the garage/shop up and running first, so you can actually have access to your tools and shop equipment to do the kitchen and bath remodels.

We just did the same thing. Moved from the Central Valley of CA out of a 3-2 with a fairly large 2-car garage to a 2-1 with a 1-car garage in the San Diego area, but with the ability to build a 24x40 in the back (RV access on one side of the house.) Home was built in 1939 and the walls/corners/floor/ceilings are actually square and plumb? We would like to make a couple of small changes, but Jodi is determined that the shop at least gets up and weather tight before anything else gets started.

I agree...garage first for tools, workspace, storage and also a place to stage materials and fixtures for the bathroom and kitchen remodel.

I agree with ^^^^

How can you work on the house if you don't have a place to work out of.

I'm assuming you moved to N. California?

Welcome....

Just think of all the help we can give you while you plan your garage while your fixing the house first. But maybe you can explain to the wife that it's easier to work on the house when you have a garage to keep the tools in.

yeah. had a 3 car thay was full of my great stuff. Milling machine, lathe, cabinet shop and so on. Moved to a place with a 22x15 shed. Packed it floor to ceiling when we got here. Most of became a rusted mess and of course could not use it as it was all shoved in simply to store. Finally sold it all since I never got the shop built and now I pretty much work off my deck or in a small corner of the shed....HATE IT!!!!! Keep planning to build a 25x35, but something always comes up right when I think I am ready. Makes me sick and is frustrating.......one day I perhaps this year I will get it done. Not sure I will get another mill, but the lathe and cabinet shop will be re-purchased at some point.

I agree. No way I would try and do a reno without a shop of some sort. A 10x16 shed does not count.

Right there with ya in some regards ---- wife wants bedrooms redone in new house before I get organized in the shop and I told her sorry. Garage is going to come first, "I'll be able to do a better job and keep my wits" if I get the garage done first. But I don't have to build mine, just organize.

Good luck!
