Hello,

I have a 20x40x12 foot metal garage that I'd like to move from my father's property to my property approximately 15 miles away. It was originally moved to it's current location 18 years ago by a company that's no longer in business. They welded in a couple I-beams across the bottom to support the whole thing but I'm not sure what kind of equipment they used to move it.

I've tried to get quotes from building movers but most of them either didn't answer the phone or never called back with an estimate when they said they would. Only one company quoted me $7k to do the move.

$7k seems high to me. That's a good percent of the price of a new garage kit. What does everybody here think? Also, anybody have any tips on getting this thing moved?

BTW. The garage is located in West Texas.

Thanks

It has to disassemble to transport, right? I'd sell it 'as-is, where-is,' and put the $ you get towards a new construction.

I'm no engineer or building moving expert, but whoever does this is gonna earn their fee.

I suspect you need several different permits, temporary re-location of power lines, traffic lights, and whatever else is in the way. Is the slab already there, where you want to move it?

It just doesn't seem practical. Wouldn't you rather have a new building? The crystal ball says, "headaches, dissatisfaction, unforeseen expenses, unneeded stresses in your life. No-need to, "ask again later." The answer will remain the same."

Back a fifth wheel trailer in there.
Take wheels off, diagonal brace it to the trailer.
Jack up trailer lifting building to put wheels back on.
Put a plastic pipe along the ridge line for wires to slide on.
Cut all the neighbors fences between his place and yours.
Buy a 6 pack of your favorite beer and go!

The big thing with moving a building that size is not the mechanics.
It is the permits and overhead wire concerns.
You need to check your route very carefully.

I'm in the camp of a lot of hassle .
a friend got a large 2 car wood framed garage for free that he moved from the city to the country. he had access to trailers, a small crane and other misc machinery for free.
in the end he saved on material but cost him a lot of time. if he would have paid for the rental of equipment it probably wouldn't have been worth it /
