Moving a toolbox

Im looking for some info, and maybe this is or isnt the place for it.

Anybody have some insight on how to get a 600# (empty) toolbox into a pickup truck? Do towing companies assist with that sort of thing? I have the convenience of cranes at work, but outside of work a tow motor or cranes arent an option. Just curious if anybody had info.

When I worked at a car dealership I saw boxes come and go on flatbed trucks. Id rather not pay their rate for the distance my box has to travel.

Even Uhaul trailers arent 19.95 when you have to have it all day or go a long distance (100 miles)

Thanks.

600 is empty but with the drawers still in it??

My large Lista weighs a lot, but empty with drawers and slides removed it became a two-man heave-and-ho operation.

Any small trailer like snowmobile or atv, especially the enclosed type with one piece lift gates. They make for a doable angle for two people to push it on.

Most people Ive known that moved large boxes just had a flatbed car hauler move it. As long as your drawers lock closed securely and the guy straps the box down just like he would a car, youre all good

you dont have a trailer or a friend with one that you could borrow ?

I have alot of **** and my boxes and carts fit in this with no problem, and i load and unload by myself. At what point do you think a few dollars becomes more of a hassle than removing tools and taking apart your toolbox

I have moved my box three or four times. Every time I take the drawers out then push it onto the trailer I have access to. If I did not have access to the trailer I would be calling a rollback to move it. There is no way I want to heave it, even without drawers in it, into the back of a truck. Might call the tow company and see what they would charge, then figure you have that much to spend and look on CL for a small enclosed trailer. I know a brand new single axle with lift gate around me can be had for 1500ish. Might end up being money ahead if you just spend the money now on a trailer.

I've moved all my boxes, but one with pick up trucks. Usually 2-3 men can do it just take all the drawers out. My classic 96 i had loaded into a uhaul truck, and then at my work we just used the wrecker flat bed to unload it, it was awesome.

I'd center it on the post of a car lift, lift it up, then back the truck up and drop the tool box in the bed. And do the opposite when dropping it off. Done this a few times.

If I had a place to keep it, id have me a trailer. But, I dont. It *****, cause it would be handy.

No way to lift it at all whatsoever where its at. Its either manpower which is difficult to arrange, or some form of miracle like a portable forklift or a rolloff driver that will load it up and winch it into the pickup bed (safely)....

used a forklift to load mine into the back of the truck. once i got home, i unloaded it with a couple of ramps. i'd guess a couple of strong guys would be able to load it into the back of a truck the same way.

Get a rollback to come out and load it, back your truck up to the rollback, roll box into your truck. Pay driver for service trip.

Drive home.

Get a rollback to come out to your house, back up to it, roll box from your truck to rollback, move your truck, let them tilt the bed and roll it off. Pay driver for service trip.

Around here that would cost about $45 per location.

u haul trailer, or one of the small trucks with the ramp.

it's gonna cost you something eventually since you dont have a trailer.

buy a trailer,
rent a trailer or truck
or manhandle it into the back of a pickup.

perosnally, i'm done with manhandling big boxes into my truck, theres never anyone around when i need help.

moving toolboxes is the only reason i havent sold my utility trailer.

This is what I was thinking... I would just need the load up though. We have cranes at work for unloading. I will have to call around and check into that.. Most of the guys I work with live on farms and have tractors and stuff they loaded their boxes with, so asking them was no help. Thats why I came here.

Are you sure your u-haul place charges for mileage on a trailer? I rent them semi-frequently and never pay more than the daily rate. Have taken them from Virginia to Canada and back for the daily rate and no more. They don't have odometers on them, so how would they know how far you went?

Last time I rented a Uhaul to drive to Florida and back, they charged me 600.00. I looked around and could not find a better price... Yes, it sucked to pay and I probably shouldnt have, but I dont have a place to keep a trailer otherwise I promise I would have one.

I've kinda thought about the same thing...in reverse. Got forks on my tractor so unloading it when I'm home is easy...but if I buy a used box, I'm gonna have to load it. my buddy has some nice aluminum ramps, in talking with others who've done it...you can either come-a-long it up into the bed or use one of the "pull type" cargo straps (not ratchet)...just push it up and keep the strap somewhat tight to prevent rollback.

Amen to that...thats why I love my tractor & forks. Heck I even slap my A/C in the bedroom window with my forks and a nice solid pallet..get the A/C right there hydraulically, then just slide it on into the window. No hernia's, no busted AC...

What about giving one of the tool truck guys some money to deliver it? I had my SO guy bring a tool box to my house for me. It cost me $30, but well worth it. They are equipped to deal with moving tool boxes...

Was it a box you bought off him? I dont know if I could look my MAC guy in the eye and tell him "I bought a used one...can you come get it & deliver it for me?" after he knows i've been shopping for a box and he's trying to get me into a box...

I have never heard of a high charge for round-trip uhaul rental. If you go one-way bend over. But how do they know what you are doing if you drop it back off with them?

uhaul trailer ... $24.95/day for 5'x9' with tailgate ramp. I'm happy to pay $25/day for trailer use vs the few thousand a quality equivalent would cost. And, then where would you store the darn thing?

You can always jack it and crib it. I had to upload a box that way once. Two piles of skids with a sheet of plywood on it. Rolled the box on strapped it to the plywood jack it up pull a skid from one side. Repeat until its down. Giant pain in the *** but free. Only reason I did it this way is the forklift was out of fuel and I didn't have a key to get a new tank.

What are the dimensions of this thing?

The heave-ho is super-cheap. All you need to do is pay one or two or three friends with pizza and beer. My Lista is 56" wide x 45" high x 28" deep. I was all nervous about loading it into my pickup. My buddy and I removed the drawers and slides and didn't even grunt or break a sweat lifting the cabinet itself into my truck.

go to uhaul with an appropriate vehicle for towing. Tell them you need an a x b size trailer for an IN TOWN MOVE. You want it for 10 hrs to give yourself time. They even let you drop it afterhours if you don't look like a serial killer, shouldn't cost more than $25. Go to harbour freight and buy a couple come alongs. One man job, Done!

Yes, what are the dimensions? I agree. Pizza and beer works best.

I was going to say engine hoist with straps, but your box already has wheels on it...

SO, get the smallest U-Haul TRUCK WITH A RAMP (it isn't their smallest, but make sure it has a ramp). You can usually get this for about $30/day (if you return it to the same location), plus fuel (you were going to pay fuel anyway). Work can load it for you. You roll it back down the ramp. Done and done.
