I used to live in Dormont and really enjoyed it there. Maybe you could keep an eye out for a neat old service station to convert for your own use.

Where are you looking? If you can live outside Allegheny Co you can have just about anything you want. My place came with a 32x40 and 3 bedroom and 4 acres and was under $170K. I still can be in downtown in about 35 mins without traffic 45 with. Keith

There are quite a few places I have seen around pgh while we were looking. Check beaver co, Washington co or butler co.

Or find a home with a little land and build a garage to your liking . Lots of options around the area.

We rented in fombell (zelienople) 3br/2br on 1 acre 2 car oversized garage for 500 mo. They sold the house for 95k last year

as stated above if you get out of allegheny county and into some of the flatter areas you can get some decent space. seems like there are a lot of pole buildings around my area in butler county...although if you are trying to be close to the airport you might check out Lawrence county along 376...should be some flat affordable areas around there

Ok long story short my current shop is 36x52 with a 10x12 office bump out. We are being transferd. To Pittsburgh for my wife's job. Everything we find there is a tiny 1 car over head door in the basement! I been spoiled for to long. We up the budget too! Way more than i like. Leaves less for tools and cars! and its either 1-1/2 to 2 hour one way comute for her on a 1 car garage for me! God i hate it there . Before yinz start with " I'm from Da'burgh" I was raised just north of zeli and my moms from sewicley. But the housing around there *****!

He said "yinz" ill drink to that!

Yeah sewickley *****.

Upper st. clair? It'll be old s(tuff)hit though. Don't know, didn't live there but closer to the city. North hills you can get pretty big housing fairly cheap but the commute is going to **** even if you're close to the highway.

It sounds like your wife will be working in the Robinson/airport area if I'm reading between the lines right. Stay out of Allegheny County at all costs and look at Beaver County or down Rt. 22 towards WV. There is still lots of open areas down that way. If you have kids make sure to see how well the school systems rate too. I have a friend that lives right at the edge or Weirton, WV and his wife made the daily commute to work in Robinson Town Center. It might be a longer drive for your wife, but everything is a compromise. Good luck.

+1 Look west along Rt. 22 towards WV and OH. Still a fairly easy drive to the airport .... but, as Andamo notes, check the schools as they can be a problem. Or, why don't you rent until you sell your existing house? Then you can move up in your price range and you'll have more time to consider your options.

Since you are willing to move with your wife's job, she should be willing to compromise and accept a somewhat longer commute. 30 to 45 minutes is not an unreasonable drive time. But, since you no longer work, and it appears she brings home the $$, you've kind of given up your bargaining power!

Can I have your tools? :)

Maybe expand your thinking? Rent for a while till the right place comes up.

You will never be happy if you compromise on something so important.

My wife and her family are from 40ish miles west of Pittsburgh, just across the Ohio River in East Liverpool, OH. Gotta be something along Rt. 30 between there and the airport that fits the bill.

Another option is to get a house close to her work and then when your place sells, buy/build a camp out of town and have your shop there. You may also be able to buy an old garage in town. you have to commute but it can be out of rush hour.

Living in Weirton will make for an easy commute to Robinson. I went to college in Steubenville (other side of Weirton) and made the commute for a year from Steubenville to Robinson every morning. It was a really easy drive and there is lots of land down 22.

I will say look at the Steubenville Ohio/ Weirton WV area as well. I grew up in the area, it seems the real estate is getting cheaper, at least from Pittsburgh prices lol.

Chris

Edit: off of 22 there is now a toll road to the airport. Bypasses Robinson with a direct route to the airport. My uncle and brother drive it all the time.

My inlaws live in imperial off of Noblesville/town exit. Everything is just a hill. My Inlaws have 2 acres better served as a ski slope. They don't even have a driveway, they park off the road and climb steps.

When my wife got her first place, she lived in Moon/ Coraeopolis. It seemed like it was a nice part of town. ADMITTEDLY, I don't know jack about the area other than what time we are leaving !!!!

oh yeah, i forgot to mention that the only reason the wife is getting transferred is because she wants me to be able to be closer to my 4 kids, so she's definitely sacrificing and we need her job to pay the bills so I guess i shouldn't be complaining
