Moving breaker in panelbox

Hello everyone, new member here. I’m moving a 40 amp breaker in my panel box and don’t have enough wire to reach where I’m putting it. I have a spare 4 foot section of 6 awg aluminum wire. On the insulation it says the following, stabiloy AA-8000AL XLPE 600V USE-2 or RHH or RHW-2. I have researched this until I got a headache. Some info said you can’t use it indoors, other info said you could. The wire feeding the breaker, which is for my range is aluminum. My plan was to just splice the two hot wires separately with a **** splicer which will allow me to make up the extra 6 inches I need. I was planning on leaving the existing ground and neutral wires where they are at. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Why are you moving it?

I am putting in a 30 amp breaker where the 40 amp breaker is, so I can install an interlock device for a generator in the event of a power outage. Per my panel box manufacture, the 30 amp has to go in the upper right position for the interlock devise to work properly.

If the splice is completely contained in the breaker panel, you are good to go. Most splices have some kind of screw to clamp the wire down inside the splice. A double wrap of GOOD (3M 88) tape should be adequate.

If you have to make the splice outside of the box, try to find a properly sized plastic junction box and use plastic conduit to connect it to the breaker box. It will need to be fastened to something.

A Polaris connector or some sort of set screw connector would be ideal. You could use a split ball also but then you have to insulate it.

Thanks for the quick response guys. I was planning on using 2 in line **** splice al/cu 14-2 is what’s stamped on them. I was going to wrap them with electricians tape 5 or 6 times as well. They will be contained in the panel box.

If the splices you are using are bare start with several wraps of rubber splice tape. Then finish with vinyl electrical tape.

They are bare, so I will use the vinyl tape. I think the wire I mentioned in my OP will work for the extension. I am a little confused because some of the research I did said you can’t use the wire indoors, and other publications say you can. The only difference I can tell on the wire was the insulation.

Use rubber splice tape before the vinyl tape. Otherwise the corners on the splice will tend to push though the vinyl tape.

The wire has RHH rating so it's fine. Could also use copper if the splice is rated for two different types of wire.

Thanks a million for the help. I have both types of tape, so I’ll do that. It’s great to hear about the wire. I was concerned it wasn’t the right rating. Saves me a trip into Home Depot.

Where did you read that RHH isnt allowed indoors?

Hi wyliediesels, I think what happened after all the responses here, was the USE-2 by itself was not to be used in doors. The wire I have had an additional RHH rating and I think that’s where I got confused. I live out in the boonies and I didn’t want to make a long drive in town for a foot of wire if I didn’t have to. Thanks to all of you, I now understand that the RHH rating allows me to use it in my breaker panel. I hope I’m understanding it that way. Thanks
