Moving from a code reader to a diagnostic tool

I'm looking for suggestions on a simple OBD2 tool that does more than just read codes and report on sensor readings.

Specifically I want something that I can use to open and close the evap solenoids so that I can get rid of my dash light.

I have no preference over stand alone units versus a single used with a laptop or phone.

I work alone and only on my own stuff so I don't need the best of the best as I have no one to impress.

Not sure I follow exactly, this doesn't answer your question, so apologies there. Speaking in generalities, the ECM still runs a "test" by doing some function and then looking for a response, and if the test fails, then you get SES light.

Being able to open and close the purge solenoid (& others) via "magic box" won't clear the code permanently. It might assist, like by reducing tank pressure, etc, but unless things are properly sealed and actuators are actuating in "auto mode" it seems like a long road.

I have Torque Pro, and I don't believe it has 2 way capability.

I also have a Verus Pro and an Autel Maxys which do, but are not in the budget of most backyard mechanics.

It seems like 'AutoEnginuity' is a name I've heard come up.

^^ As matt mentions, actuating a solonoid won't fix anything, and can be accomplished without a scantool.

A scantool might help force a rediness or evap test before all the parameters are met, but if you know what the parameters are you can usually operate the vehicle in a way to initiate the tests, it's just slower that pushing a button on the scantool.

Is there something in particular you are trying to do?

I want to force the solenoids open and closed and monitor the pressure to see if the system is venting properly.

As I understand it, my Avalanche has two EVAP solenoids. If the solenoids themselves are not the issue then I need them both to be closed when using my smoke machine. I was hoping for a tool that would allow me to verify each is closed and open close them as I please.

Take them off and try to blow through them. If they are stuck open they are no good. Purge valve on the engine end is super easy to get to, and a common failure. Scan tool really isn't going to help you here. Smoke test would be much closer to what you need.
