Hey guys..

Long time lurker who hasn't started his project yet!
I found a a fellow who has a detached garage and hes selling it to anybody who wants it for $2k. I was hoping to start a garage build in 1-2 years and this may be a good enough deal to where i may jump on it depending on some answers and estimates.

How much can i expect to pay in labor to get somebody (side job guy) to disassemble the garage and re-install it at my house not including foundation slab?

--Details--
Garage is detached, but my configuration requires an attached garage
Truss roof with stucco exterior and tongue groove decking
23' x 26' x 9' tall.. I require 21 Lx26 W for a zoning requirement

Note: This is in CA.

Even without seeing it (pictures would help), I'm sure you'd spend more on having someone disassemble/move/reassemble it than it would cost to build a new one (with all the details and size you want/need).

ie, he'd have to pay you (more than $2k) to take it away for it to be worth your while.

If that's a wood structure, I'm not sure I'd bother either, and certainly not to pay someone to disassemble it. By the time some hired help gets done knocking down a wood structure you won't have material, you'll have fire wood. Very, expensive, firewood...

Stucco can't be removed and reinstalled, so expect a big bill for removal and disposal and just as big of a bill to have new applied.

I'm guessing but I'm thinking 50-60 hours to disassemble it carefully enough to be able to put it back together, 30-40 hours and $500-$1000 in new materials to get it back together not including concrete work.

its 23 x 26 and you need 21 x26 ?...........you not only have to tear it down but reassemble it 2' smaller?............how you going to do that without the labor going thru the roof.
forget it

here you go....be done in 15 minutes, tremendous labor saver.
If I remember right he was $3000 to show up and so much a lift.
draw backs, he has a lifting capacity of 5000# and you do have to have a wee bit of insurance.
still might be cheaper in the long run..........lol

I think you have to really look at what you are getting. You're going to pay, at a very minimum, a few hundred to have a guy come and strip the stucco off it and dispose of it. So, you're not only not getting siding but you're paying for removal/disposal of stucco. The same is true of the roof. Is the pitch of the roof exactly the same as your house that it's going to be attached to? If not, you're not getting trusses. Are the studs exactly the right height to match up to what you're attaching to so the plate line is the same (if that's what you want)? If not you're not getting studs or you're paying someone to remove nails and cut down to size. It seems to me what you're really getting is some T&G lumber and maybe a vehicle door or two.

Most of the move-on buildings in my area are the result of a freeway project. They were sold for $1 and moved at the buyer's expense as a whole unit. I certainly wouldn't recommend that strategy for what you're doing. The cost to move is largely dependent on access to both sites, the roadways that it has to travel on and the number of signs/wires/trees, etc that have to be moved along the way.

What you're buying is the cheap part of a garage and you're paying a lot to get it.

All the above info is correct. If the following ifs all lined up, I might do it, but then my time is worth nothing.
If I was getting paid a fair price to demolish and remove the structure (Comparable to other demolition contractors in the area).
If the structure was all wood construction and in very good condition.
If it was vinyl sided, not faded, and in a pattern and color I could match.
If I didn't have to remove the slab.
If there was perfect access for vehicles and trailers.
If there were some extras such as good lighting or electrical such as sub panel etc.
If there was only one layer of shingles or a metal roof.
If there was a very good insulated garage door.
If it was very close by.
Extra: If there was an over sized garage door and extra height walls.

And if I wanted it bad enough to want to do the work entirely myself.
Then maybe.

When disassembling all roofing will be trash.
It will take more labor to disassemble than to build.
You will end up with a pile of wood lumber and a pile of siding.
Sheathing will probably be unusable. Is it board or ply or OSB?
If recently built, is the garage door header LVL's or just 2x dimensional lumber?
Quality man door and hardware?
Garage door opener?
Any benches or contents included?

In other words, you would do better by dumpster diving at subdivisions being built.
This guy is saving himself a ton of money at some poor fools expense. It's like the CL ad for free firewood...come cut down my tree.

BTW...Welcome to GJ!
This was a good subject for a first post as lots of these, as well as sheds come up on CL. It's a subject worth discussing.

I'm with everyone else. save the $2000, put it in savings for your future garage. This guy is looking to make a buck on something he wants gone? Tell him to pay you $2000 instead.

Also you will have to rent a dumster to remove all the singles and stucco. I would pass on this, if free and some king of good siding if might be a deal.
