OK – here’s the deal. We are moving to Christiansburg VA and closed on our new garage...er...I mean house this past week. Garage is 23 foot wide, with one bay being 23 foot deep, the other being 30 foot deep.

TODAY - Using Supercoat on the floor, ordered 4 kits from Sam's Club. Spent the day sanding the floor (think there may have been a sealer applied when the house was built, called the Supercoat’s help line and they recommended that I sand with a floor buffer - better safe than sorry), then pressure washing, then the degreaser, then rinse and rinse again. I have pictures; will post later as my wife forgot the cable to hook up the camera to the computer.

THE PLAN :headscrat

Nothing to extravagant. Once the floor is done will put up some cabinets and a bench. Will post pics as it progresses, so be patient.

Still no pics of work :(, but got a floor plan of what it looks like right now. Only thing missing from floor plan is a post in the middle holding up a beam to the second story.

Pics soon...I promise!!!

These pics are after sanding the floor. In the first one you can see the difference a little in the front of the garage behind the sander...picture doesn't do justice to the difference...

OK, these are post pressure washing. As mentioned in the first post, sanded floor, pressure washed (2800 PSI washer) with concrete cleaner/degreaser, rinsed, then washed floor with the degreaser included in the Supercoat kit. Followed this up with two more rinses. These pics are post pressure washing only, as not a real difference after the additional washing/rinsing. This was all done this past Saturday…LONG DAY… Figure if anything is left on the floor after all of that, I be screwed...

Got the Epoxy on today - started about 11 AM, finished up about 4 PM. Only real issue today was I needed a spatula to get all of the mixture from the small can to the big can (not sure if it was necessary or just my OCD kicking in). Am a little concerned about the temps - getting down into the mid 40s tonight, so I don't know if it will set up enough for the glaze to go on tomorrow. Wife critiqued me on my inability to spread the chips evenly - sent her back to the kitchen to clean. Looks good now...see how the rest of the process goes. BTW - only took 3 of the 4 kits. Coverage was as advertized by Supercoat.

Got the glaze coat on. Went on very thin, so I used two coats with the included non-skid added. Pictures are kind of crappy, but it has a great shine and seems very durable. Cannot say enough about Supercoat...think it was a great deal through Sam's, and went on very easy. Customer service was great as well. Initial appearance and feel are as good as a friend’s garage who used U-Coat It. Anxious to see how it wears over time.

I will post more as I build the bench, cabinets and get the walls painted. Still have to get the move done, so it may take a while

Did you use one or two coats? I'll be doing a Supercoat floor soon Here:
Any thing you'd do differently ?

regguy - I used one coat of the epoxy (3 kits worth for my garage), and the glaze from those 3 kits went on in two coats - guess I put it on a little thin, used a 3/8 nap roller for the epoxy, and a 1/4 for the glaze.
Things I would have done different 1) got some dark blue chips to add in with what I got in the kits - was more black and white and the light blue doesn't show up well. 2) paid more attention to rolling out/mixing the glaze - had a couple of spots that seem to have more of the non-skid than elsewhere.

softailtom - I used the residential glaze that came in the kits from Sam's Club. Talking to Brian in customer service, he recommend that you re-coat the glaze every 2-3 years, so I will probably use the industrial glaze then if it is looking a little thin.

OK...progress on the new garage has slowed to a crawl as the move continues. Got the Mustangs in their new home this past weekend (cars can be seen on my info page or NC garage). Was a LONG drive in 40 year old cars, but no break downs and lots of looks.

Not sure what my next project on the garage will be, as time and money will dictate. Hope to get the bench done and some cabinets up…Plan is to keep this thread updated as I continue to work. Hope y'all enjoy and get some ideas.

Mustanger,

You should really consider some sort of organizational system for the next project. I am closing on a new house in a few more weeks and have already thought out the epoxy, shelving, and paint for the walls.

I have seen some pretty good deals online. I know some of the big-box stores will have specials coming up; however I noticed some good looking cabinets and benches at garage101.com (if you don't decide to build your bench and storage yourself).

Good Luck!

DoTheMahoney - Agree w/everything you are saying, and used some of the cabinets from one of the big box stores in my garage in NC. Problem with majority of the kits I have seen is they use 5/8" thick MDF for the shelving. Experience here in NC has taught me that I need 3/4" thick shelves for my stuff. Big issue I will have will be $$$. Found some that do have 3/4" shelving at http://www.garagestoragecabinets.com/ but may not be able to afford.

Thanks again for the feedback.

The move is complete...or I guess I should say all of our stuff is in the new house. Not unpacked, and as you can see, the garage is a mess. Had to do’s for the wife before I could get much done in Man-Land.

First thing to do was paint. Walls are textured (I have no idea why someone would texture walls in a garage), so spaying seemed to be the way to go. Got one of the Wagner Paint Crews. Worked OK, but a lot of overspray. Walls are now white.

Next on To Do list is a bench followed by cabinets. Can't get organized until I have someplace to put all that stuff!! Working on the bench this evening, so Pics will be posted as I get them.

Enjoy!!!

Got the bench finished. It is 24" deep, by 90" long, and 36" high. Top is Red Oak 3/4" plywood, 1 1/2" thick (split a 4’x 8’ sheet in half), with a Red Oak 1x6 backing and 1x1 1/2” edging. Front posts are pressure treated 4x4s, and bracing is 2x4s. Used 2 ½” and 3” decking screws to put everything together, and Gorilla Glue to laminate the two pieces of plywood for the top.

You can see the white paint I got up on the walls behind the bench.

Now that I have somewhere to work, I can get cabinets done.

Thanks doolots! The ceiling is 10', but there are cross beams in the middle (between the two doors) and across the bump-out that are both at about 9’. Doors are 9' wide by about 7' tall.

Awesome thanks! It gives me a great visual with what I will be building asap once my city stops being a holes. They cut me down from 24x32x16 to 24x24x10...

Your floor looks great also!

Started working on the cabinets on Sunday, and should finish up tomorrow, so yeah, I am a couple of days late in posting these pics.

I decided to build instead of buying for cost reasons. I wanted to make sure that the cabinets were durable, easy to clean, and looked good. Big box stores cabinets are too cheap, and I just couldn't afford the ones on line that have the 3/4" melamine. Total cost for all the materials was about $400, and for comparable ones I estimate that they would have cost me over $800 with shipping. Maybe one day I will be able to afford the Modine or Gladiator cabinets :)

Everything the shelves and cabinets will be glued (Gorilla Glue) and screwed (2 ½” and 3” decking screws) with hidden hinges.

Pictures outline a few of the steps I used. I am not a professional cabinet maker, or even a good one, but I think that these will hold up. I will post pics tomorrow when I am finished with the cabinets and getting some of my pictures and signs up.

Finished with the cabinets, got some pictures up, and am now about organized (not quite, but close). Big things still on the to-do list are -

1) Florescent lights in place of the three 60w bulbs
2) Paint the concrete knee-wall Ford Blue
3) Get three more 110 and two 220 electrical outlets wired in
4) See about putting in a deep sink

Anyway, that is in the future. For now, enjoy the pics of the 75% solution.

Nice progress Mustanger. Nice Corral your building for the horses.

I like the cabinet idea. I have been shopping all the box stores to see who can give me the best price on 42" tall wall cabinets. The standard ones on the shelf are 30". The 42" are special order and much more money. I'm thinking about building my own like you did to get what I want and to know they will not fall apart from poor quality wood. What hinges did you choose?

BTW, you commented on why a builder textures garage walls... Its because texturing can cover up a not-so-perfect wall finishes. In other words, for a smooth finish, it takes more work and attention to detail. Texture will cover up a boatload of sins.

Keep up the good work on the Corral. (possible name for the shop??)

Wingnut 65 - I used the Liberty hinges that you get at Home Depot - I think they were the 110 degree, but I could be wrong. You will need the bit to countersink the hinges in the door, not sure where I picked mine up at, but I am sure they are at Home Depot also.

Good luck with your project!!

(Corral, hmm...may have to talk that over with CNC House. She is partial to the Dungeon or Man-Land)

Floor update - had a couple of people who had asked me about how the floor went down and how I thought it would hold up. 6 months later, having done a couple of oil changes, new brakes in one of the cars, and general putzing around, and I have two places where I had hot tire pick up (strange - was raining when we got home and pulled both cars in garage, one car stuck, other one didn't. Tire composition maybe?) and two places where I chipped with something, not sure what. Overall, still happy with the floor.

Garage looks good!

I like your cabinets as i'm in a similar situation. I do love the size and layout of your garage. As somebody with a 10x20 garage, this is awesome!

Somehow I missed this thread. Thanks for posting the pics. Your garage is coming along nicely!

I like your 67. I noticed you improved the safety by installing 68-up headrests, shoulder belts, and a 3rd brake light. Since the floor of the trunk is literally the top of the gas tank, have you considered installing a firewall behind the seat? I did that in my 66 coupe.

28HopUp - Thanks!!

The seats are Flo-Fit that were upholstered by a place in Riverside CA called M&M Detail. I get a lot of comments about them, and they are WAY more comfortable than even the 68 w/headrests.

As for the gas tank, am getting ready (hopefully in next 6-12 months) going to take it apart and upgrade suspension, electrical system, and yes, the fuel system. Instead of a firewall, I am looking at putting a fuel cell in with an electronic fuel pump.

All - Been a while since I have posted, and wanted to do a follow up on the Supercoat floor...4+ years later and it is still holding up OK. No additional tire pickups, but quite a few more chips from dropping tools. I never had a chance to put additional topcoat due to life, work, hunting.

Getting ready to move again, and this time I will try something different for the floor as it will be our last move, having garage built etc. Look for a thread on the new garage in the coming weeks...
