The state highway that we live on is undergoing a widening project, so a few homes and buildings have to be razed for the road right of way. I was able to acquire a 24 x 30 2 car garage and we are having it moved to our house, which is 6 miles from the original location of the garage. We needed a garage, and it seemed a waste to demolish a perfectly good building, so I rolled the dice. I'll attempt to post photos of the project.

This is very cool. Was this cheaper to buy and move the garage then it would have been to build a new one. I have seen this done with house that you can buy for $1 and them moving them costs around $50k.

This makes my heart happy. I am glad you were able to same a usable structure and that it will have a new and long life. Keep the pictures coming as you set it on the foundation and finish it out.

Nice!

We had an extension highway put in around here several years ago, and the people in the middle of the path got bought out, and their houses torn down. A couple people near the edge got their houses moved. I wish somebody would pay to have my house moved, I'd like an updated basement, lol.

Nice save OP !! Love to see when buildings are saved.

There is high-volume intersection near major interstate that has been gobbling up houses where land is converted to commercial zoning. Some have became insurance offices or realtor offices. However, this week a very nice brick house with detached 2 car garage was next to switch from res to comcl.

First they torn off limbs to 40 ft oaks and left bare trunk 30 ft tall. Then they began salvaging a few things from house and garage. Thought the garage was going to be moved . . . . BUT . . . . after 3 wks sitting idle, lot was wiped clean yesterday. House, garage, trees, and foundation GONE in one day!! I'm guessing the land will now have build with new restaurant. :eyecrazy:

I had a nice insulated 5" thick slab poured for my future 32 X 40 shop / mancave last fall. Then the wife says, "You already have a shop, and all I have is a carport and I still don't have storage space for the stuff in the attic!". Then I spotted the doomed garage down the road...
This will be the "woman cave".

miker88, I was quoted approx. $24000 to build a garage identical to this one from a couple of reputable contractors, and that didn't include wiring. I'll be into this one for about $8000 after I complete the fascia and lower siding repairs. And more importantly, the wife is stoked!

Very nice, kudos for recycling and repurposing, and saving a ton of money at the same time.

In the third picture with the truck and garage parked, is that how they had it hooked up to travel down the road, or was there some leveling, etc. going on after they parked? That cobbled-up arrangement of chains and assorted lumber looks pretty sketchy.

Yes, that's how it traveled! Spooky, huh? I joked with the mover and asked if that was D.O.T spec, and he just chuckled. I suppose that there are infinite variables when it comes to moving buildings, and this method must work the best for smaller ones. These guys have been in this business for years, so I wasn't a bit worried - even after I saw this contraption. A couple of years ago, the same guys moved an old steam locomotive engine down the same road I live. It was quite a sight.

Sorry for the neck problems. I've edited the photos, so now you won't have to take any advil before viewing the photos.
We're really happy with the way it turned out. The North wall isn't contacting the floor yet. It just flops around right now. The garage's original slab had sunk on the side walls a bit, causing a bow on the end walls. Hopefully the north wall will settle down on its new slab. I'll drill and bolt the walls down anyway.
We'll bolt her down and wait till this fall to repair and paint the siding and add the new 36" door on the East wall, along with insulation and walls.

Here's where the project is now. Next step is to connect the electrical. This fall I'll tackle the addition of a new walk thru door on the east side facing the house, siding repair, paint and garage door openers. Any reviews on garage door openers would be appreciated.

Electrical plans regarding my garage: I have a 25' run to the power pole 200A shutoff below the pole) and plan to run a wire underground to a junction box in this garage. From there, I'd run into a 100A disconnect above the junction box to the breaker panel in the garage. The breaker panel has a 100A main in it. Eventually, I'd like to build my shop that will be about 50' from this garage. My thought was to go from the junction box in this garage to the new shop. New show will have a 200A box. Will 2/0-2/0-2/0-4 be sufficient to run from the pole to the garage junction box?

Contact your electric utility and see if they will send an engineer out before you do anything. This is a free service (here anyway). The engineer will tell you what you need to do and also advise on the gauge wire needed for the service. The engineer may recommend a 320 service to adequately feed both buildings.

Also discuss the possibility of using a "combo" meter socket with spaces for two or four circuit breakers. You can put a 100 amp double pole in the socket base to feed the garage. Then, when the shop is ready you can tap into the 200 lugs on the meter socket.

I have a 200 amp combo meter base on my house and send 100 amps to my shop.

Garage looks like it's been there forever. Nice move.

I love my liftmaster 8500 garage door openers.
so many options and they tuck out of the way

Here's a little update on the mobile garage project. I needed a walk through door on the east side, so here are a few pics of that installation. I'm no carpenter, but I'm pretty happy with the end result.

I bought a couple of garage door openers through HD that were online order specials. I'll post a review once I get my wiring finished (electrician is gone for 2 weeks of National Guard drill). This was the first time I've installed a garage door opener. Opener #2 install should go a little more smoothly than this one. The doors require a reinforcement bracket. A friend happened to have one that he gave me, so I'll need to order one for door #2. This pic was right after I mounted the opener. I'll run all the wires this weekend, and hopefully have the other one done as well. Wiring should be finished next week, then we're on to ceiling and walls.

Here's a picture of the East side after we painted it. Replaced the really bad siding with new and just painted the rest. We still need to paint / replace some of the eave trim, but it is getting there. I built the rock parking pad using guard rail posts that were given to me by the road crews working on the highway in front of my house. AB-3 base rock topped with a layer of clean rock.

Looks great. Glad you were able to save money and save an existing building instead of it going to waste!

Friend down the road has a house that's a combination of 3 different buildings - two houses and a printing shop - combined, which he each bought for a dollar and paid to move. Very neat setup. The buildings were a buck a piece and the moving costs not too bad (one came down the main runway of our airport at one point to eliminate wire moving costs). There's 12' ceilings in the basement.
