Moving Yard Stuff From Garage - Need Deck Box Advice

I'm at the point where some of the yard and garden stuff is finally leaving my garage - things like the extra grille tank, patio furniture cushions, dog chains, watering can, hose nozzles, etc. Since my HOA won't allow sheds, the only choice I have to free up garage space is a deck box. I'd rather have wood but no time to build one and $300 for a pre-fab one doesn't fit the budget so plastic it is.

I'm looking at Suncast and Rubbermaid units from Lowes and Home Depot and wanted to know first hand experience with these types of boxes. Online reviews are split about evenly between them constantly falling apart and being the best thing since sliced bread.

Check Target now, I just bought the 129 gallon suncast on clearance for $59. It is about 50% off, and seems nice. 5 minute assembly, and my wife is happy.

I have had a Suncast on my deck for about 10 years to hold the chair cushions. Works great & never had a problem with it. I do however put the deck box in my shed in the winter time. How about building one of those extensions on to the back of your house somewhere. I don't know what to call it but one side of it would be againt the house & be more the size of a closet than a shed. The HOA might just go for that.

I plan on building a 4'Wx8'Dx7'H garden type storage shed on my existing concrete deck. I have a 10'x20' unused area. During my research it was cheaper to build (approx. $350) than to buy any pre-fab. I also needed the shed to be hurricane proof.

How apropos... I'm in the same situation right now, trying to get the kids pool toys and **** out of the garage and out onto the pool deck. I'm going to look into that Suncast box right now.

Are these things water-tight/air-tight/spider-tight? I'd love to keep the cushions on the deck, but can't sell the idea to the wife unless I can guarantee she won't get into a turf war with giant spiders every time we use the cushions...

I have two styles of the Rubbermaid.....

One has just a lid...toss stuff in. Very tough...

The other is larger, has a split lid and the front opens up.....not so tough...had to exchange the lids because the rear 'catch' that locks into the lower portion was weak...bad batch off the injection machine. Except for that problem, it's been fine...holds more.

I've had both for about 4 years...I will most likley get rid of both of them in the near future once I start the 2-story addition...no space....and I'm about finished with the closet behind my garage.

Make sure it's big enough to hold everything you want. We made the mistake of not buying one large enough and have to stuff the chair cushions into it.

HOA will not approve any type of shed structure. A "portable" wood or plastic deck box is the only thing allowed.

Are these things water-tight/air-tight/spider-tight? I'd love to keep the cushions on the deck, but can't sell the idea to the wife unless I can guarantee she won't get into a turf war with giant spiders every time we use the cushions...

It'll be about as spider-tight as my garage. I'm sick of having cushions in the garage so my wife gets two options - the deck box or the attic. Doubt she'll climb in the attic every time she wants a cushion.

I'm planning one of the 129 gallon units like 54stude mentioned. Looking for the biggest unit that has a single piece lid and no swing out side or front panels.

Or, you could build one -- make it any size you need, get that "I built it myself" satisfaction, and it would look much nicer than any plastic box:

The Suncast box will keep the cushions dry & clean but the spiders can still get in. Must be from the bottom. You might be able to seal it better with a little silicone.

You might try putting some mothballs in the deck box to reduce the spiders. OR you could try some pieces of cedar.

From my experience they are not spider tight. We pulled some pool noodles out of a friend's deck box to use in the pool, the next thing we knew, some brown recluses had joined us in the pool. They got in the deck box and we living in the holes in the pool noodles.

Can't go wrong with the Suncast...we've had some for many years sitting outside with no issues. Not water/bug proof as the bottom is semi-open, but I keep charcoal, cushions, citronella, etc in them with no issues.

That would be considered a 'lean-to'.. and he stated that $300 was already above his budget, and it would be a bit more than that to do it right and match the house with siding, shingles, etc.. Though I think they are a great solution and a nice looking way to get some functional storage.

i have the sam's club one. i'm using it as my "outside the gate mailbox for packages" box. it's watertight but not spider-proof. wife & i went to every store looking at deck boxes. this was the best deal for size and price.

the open in front models are a b*tch if the deck isn't perfectly level because the 2 doors & lid won't line up.

the ones at target came in second so if they're on clearance for you, grab one.

and get the biggest box that you can fit in your space. bigger box just means you'll run out of space a little later...
