Can anybody ne point me in the right direction regarding shipping a tool box? I'm moving from Long Island(NY) to the west coasts sat of Florida. It's a Snapon, 55"x24"x39", 700lbs unladen, probably about 1000lbs with tools in it. Thanks

Make a pallet for it and ship it LTL if you can. If have a way of loading it on a semi or taking it to their terminal it will save you a lift gate charge. I don't think it should cost much but last time I got an LTL quote my jaw about hit the floor, they were getting 1/2 truckload rate for 1 pallet.

Don't know what LTL means (I'm asking for my son the mechanic) but I will keep on trucking...no pun intended...with this situation! Thanks

Less Than Load.
They'll fill a semi trailer with items going in the same general direction, so sometimes it might take a bit longer as they wait till the trailer is full.

Kinda like UPS on steroids.

Also look at the value of the box verses the shipping cost. May be worth it to sell and buy another one when you get there.

When I moved mine I put them in the Uhaul we loaded with house stuff

UPS and FEDEX are the 2 biggest LTL shippers in the US. Usually their freight terminals are separate from their package terminals though.

OP if you live in the area that you're shipping the box from just be on the look out for semi trucks without a sleeper on the back of the cab, write down the company names you see for a week then look them up and call them. Most of those will be LTL companies.

"LTL" means less than load. The shipper consolidates items to fill the truck and yours is one of them. Because of this process, they usually cannot quote exact delivery dates because the loading can be unpredictable. But they can give you a range and solidify the date later.

Get quote from LTL carrier with terminal in your location as well as destination. Deliver box to terminal and pickup at destination terminal will save you big bucks otherwise they will require a tailgate loader truck at both ends to handle a piece that heavy

How is the rest of his stuff moving? Does the box have to go by its self.

Ditto. We need to know this. If your son doesn't have much stuff to take besides the toolbox, I'd probably just load it in a trailer with his other stuff and tow it down to Florida -- assuming he has a vehicle capable of towing a 2,000 pound and up trailer? Can rent a trailer pretty cheap -- will be cheaper than movers.

I'm confused here as well;

How are you moving the rest of your stuff?

1) If by paid movers, let them figure it out, that's why they quote and they figure it out
2) If yourself (in a Uhaul), then you'll probably need to unload everything into smaller boxes, just like if you were moving anything else in your house and you'll put in the muscle to put it on the truck

If you ship it LTL, be aware it could go through many multiple terminals. I suggest you build a coffin (6 sided wooden box) to protect your tool box because it may very well get damaged. Don't forget it needs to have fork pockets.
