I have an old ACE (MTD) 42 inch riding mower . Is there a good source for inexpensive blades? I go through about 3 sets a year.

I thank it is about time to get a replacement mower instead of blades.

Please don't take my post the wrong way.

You must be commerical mowing with your mtd, unless you are not resurfacing them with a grinder?

I have a rough acre I mow... Lotsa rocks, and each spring more heave up. The blades hit the rocks and bend. I heat and straighten them, but its a hassle and they seldom work as well as new. Just trying to find a cheap source. The mower is 11 years old and still works great!

I have an MTD mower, a 46", but it gets similar abuse- eats blade bearings too. I've had good luck trolling feeBay. Much cheaper than the local supply house.
Tried rigging a "cowcatcher" type of implement on the front to shove the rocks off to the sides? Wouldn't work at my place; the rocks are like icebergs - 90% hidden.

:) Its Montana. We dont have no wimpy soil! You cant pound a post in this soil, To dig a posthole requires a bar and a shovel. They dont even sell "clamshell" diggers in this area.

I've been here at this home about 3 years. I can pick up a wheelbarrow full of rocks today, tomorrow, the next day, ad nauseum. I'm sure eventually I'll get most all of them picked. I do mow my lawn fairly short. I like it that way.
The front yard is all picked, and has a beautiful lawn. I dont hit rocks there.
Its just gonna take a while. I acknowledge that. Eventually it'll all look nice. I'm just hoping to find a cheaper source for the blades - that's all.
I've lived in Montana all my life, and they dont call em the rocky mountains for nuthin'

eBay... I got a box of 10 blades for my Craftsman 42" mower for about $79. They arrived, were not the sharpest I've ever seen but well painted. Made in Mexico, not sure if they are good steel or not (I've yet to even start the tractor!) but I'm sure they will be OK. Around here I have a lot of sand and that destroys the blades fast.

eBay - I got a box of 23 McLane edger blades (i.e. original box of 25 minus 2) for about $15. A bit rusty, but sharp. Enough for my son and I for the rest of our lives !

Try flea market. I see venders there with new blades but I've never compared prices.

I am paying $16 for two Oregon brand blades for a 42 inch mower from the local small engine distributor. Sandy soil around here wears the lift clean off of them shortly.
