Just wrapped up a Mr Cool 4th Gen DIY 24k unit to cool my 4 car garage here in Phoenix AZ. It was 109 out when I first fired it up and it cooled my garage to 80 degrees within 30 minutes. My garage is insulated on all walls and the ceiling as are the garage doors, which face the west. Unit is very quite outside and inside.

i purchased the 16’ line set because the 25’ that came with it was way to long. Now I measured and 16’ should have been a very close fit. My 16’ line set was closer to 18’ so I had to snake the line set a little to make things line up. The 25‘ line set that some with the unit is not wrapped, your expected to do that with the provided tape. The 16’ line set comes in a sleeve so it adds protection but adds some bulk when you try to cover it the cover set.

since it’s so dusty here in Phoenix I’m going to make a cover to lay over the top of the indoor unit to keep some dust out of the intake. My concern is that when I fire it up it will just turn into a dust blower.

really wish they offered the kit with the 16’ line set. Now I have a 25’ line set, drain tube, and a bunch of UV tape I have no need for. Perhaps I’ll try and sell it on here to someone who needs more length.

appreciate all the posts by others, really helped me decide on this unit.

Interested in what you come up with for a filter. Too much restriction and the coil will freeze

Just perform preventive maintenance on your condenser unit every month and use a soft garden spray to wash down the condenser coils t rid the dust and dirt trapped in the fins.

Not worried about the outdoor unit it’s the inside unit. The air intake is on top, so basic wide open for dust to fall into. Thinking a simple piece of vinyl fabric will work well. typically felt backed so it won’t scratch things up either.

I installed a 3rd gen 24k in my shop a couple years ago, I love it. If you have weird temperature control issues moving the inside unit temp sensor outside of the case helped a lot with mine. It is on a wire harness that you can easily move around.
The inside unit on mine doesn't get near as dusty as I thought it would, maybe because it's high up on the wall. One of my project cars sitting right below it is always dusty, but I hardly saw anything when cleaning the filters on the unit.

if its a wall evaporator unit, you can always pop the unit off the wall and hang it on its hanging bracket. Tape a plastic tarp to the wall around the unit and funnel it into a pail.
Then buy an evaporator coil cleaner and dilute it with water. Pump spray it on the evaporator coil and the condensate pan.
Let it sit and rinse off with water.

Another trick for dusty environments is to use a coarse return air filter cut to fit the return opening of the wall unit's return opening.
The flimsy foam filter being used in the evaporator unit needs this pre filter.

If you search on youtube there's a guy who made a filter case to hold a rack of furnace filters to filter the incoming air for his mini split in a wood shop. If there's enough filter area the pressure drop will be minimal.

If I had a mini in a shop, this is what I would do. Installing and removing a cover sounds like a pain in the *** and easy to forget

Hey .
I just did a 18,000btu in my small ish 3 car garage. It does a good enough job but it certainly isnt going from 109 to 80 in 30 minutes. I need to do some blown in ceiling insulation (have drywall but no insulation). Walls are cinderblock.

I’m up in the north west corner of the valley, Peoria. Thanks. Happy with how it turned out overall.

really wish they offered these with the 16’ option. Now I have a 25’ lineset, lots of rolls of tape, drain hose and wall sleeve I don’t need. Probably just put it up for sale on here. Someone may need it to extend theirs.

You cant just add more lineset. That much will require a change in the refrigerant charge. I think selling it will be tough

Hi, from west Chandler! Good to hear your install worked great. Just finished my 24k unit install that will make it bearable to finish insulating the scissor trusses in my 24x32x10. Went with a FB unit I had to vacuum the lines myself, but already had a pump and guages. The hardest part of the install was bending the lines coming off the evaporator tight enough to fit under the line set cover. I was lucky enough to be able to use the 3-meter line setMini Split done 2.jpgMini split works!.jpg that came with the package.

I guess I am confused then by the people who buy them to extend their install. Never saw any mention of needing to charge them. based on Mr. Cool description and responses on Lowe’s and HomeDepot the lines are pre-charged. Maybe I’m missing something.

I forgot Mr cool uses pre-charged linesets. Usually the charge is in the condensor

With Mr.cool you can add more pre-charged lineset length (in premade sizes). If you do that, you need their lineset connector fittings, and can't exceed the maximum total length the system allows.
