looked great until i read the installation manual. these still require an evacuation, etc...
may want to double check the manuals, if you were thinking you were just going to plug and play, like the mr cool diy.
I mostly just read and learn on this site, but thought I would share my experience with the Mr. Cool DIY 12k mini split. I'm in central Georgia and just installed it last weekend, but so far it has been great.
Pros:
-Painless ordering from Ingrams and arrived in just a few days; slightly cheaper than Amazon; I also included a gray plastic pad in my order and still came out cheaper than Amazon
-Works awesome - installed this unit in my basement to cool about 600 sq. ft. of finished area
-Install was just as easy as it sounds - planning, simple hand tools, and you're done
-Low cost of $1100 total expense - I had an estimate to install a second full-sized system for $8500, or a mini split for $5500
-I was worried about lack of dehumidification due to the light load of being in a basement, but so far it maintains very comfortable temp and humidity level
Cons:
-I had a very short run so the fixed-length lineset is quite an eye sore. Still trying to come up with creative ways to cover/hide it.
It's only been a week, but based on my experience so far I highly recommend the Mr. Cool DIY units if you think one will meet your needs.

I just finished installing 18K unit...the electrician hooked it up checked for power...NOTHING...
The inside unit does not appear to be online...no display...no response to the remote...NOTHING...
They DID NOT RESPOND today to their support-'contact form'
There is NO TELEPHONE SUPPORT.
I'm taking it out/down and taking it back to Home Depot.
This is the second unit...the first compressor unit, after I had installed the inside unit...had a huge dent in it right near the controls/electronics/wiring so I reboxed it and took it back.
How does anyone do business now-days without telephone support?
I'll get something else and will never recommend these guys.
It was a lot of work for nothing.

They wont get my money now.

Well I had a hookup issue that was totally my fault and I called Ingrams who is the US distributor and they told me exactly what I had done wrong and it was working in 10 minutes. I couldn't be happier with my unit.

So what are the specific differences between the mr cool diy kits and the other mr cool kits? The 18,000 advantage system is $848 at Home Depot and the diy system is $1400. Both include installation kit.
I have an HVAC friend who can help me with install if the difference is just special tools or a vacuum on the lines, etc.
Is there an advantage to the diy kit that is worth over $500?

I paid way less than that for my DIY kit delivered to my door from Ingrams. But to answer your question, yes the only difference is the fact that you don't need any HVAC tools. The lines are pre charged.

Edit: nm, found it. Looks like it's $1300+ at ingrams. Still $400 more than the non diy kit. Any idea how much an hvac man would normally charge?

I just ordered a 24K DIY kit today. Ill start a separate thread on the install and link it back here. I've read some do's and dont's for coiling the excess copper. I've got quite a few ideas on how to cover it, but I'd like to see a picture of the "correct" way to do this. Supposedly if you coil it the wrong way, the oil will pool in the coils. Is this bunk?

For anyone in Ontario, Canada that has installed this DIY minisplit, have you tried to get any government rebates? I wonder if it'd qualify, or if they'll insist it's done by an HVAC contractor?

Make sure the drain is the lowest thing coming out the hole. Use oil on the flares (as the final seal) pack the hole outside with steel wool and then seal it with duct sealant.

New guy here. This thread has awesome info, thanks to everyone for sharing. My situation: Tri-level house with 3 bedrooms upstairs, really hot upstairs even with ac running full blast. Mini split seems like a great option. Got 2 quotes for a 3 zone mini split, one quote for $10k and the other for $14K! unreal.
Would installing 1 Mr.Cool upstairs help cool the other 2 rooms up there? Or would each room need its own? Rooms are standard size bedrooms, nothing crazy. Thanks for any advise

Installed a MrCool 18000 in my home. Took a little longer as I ran copper lines & electrical through 2" sched 80 PVC (didn't like the vinyl wrap look). Lines are pre-charged so no vac down required. So far unit is working great & cooling top level (1200 sq. ft. ) as long as I keep a couple bedroom doors closed. Unit construction is not real heavy duty but can't complain for the price. I believe there are a couple other manufacturers putting their name on the exact same unit.

Not a Mr Cool unit but thought i would share anyway... I installed two Mitsubishi mini splits in our barndominium two years ago and couldn't be happier with them. We are in south texas with 90+ temps and it is 64-66 inside at all times(i like it cold). Due to the fact that it is stick framed inside a metal insulated building does help quite a bit but i think for the $$ they are a great option.
Old thread I know, but I'm looking to buy one of the Mrcool units for my new shop. I just bought a lakeside house in Sliverlake, WA and it gets pretty cold in the winter and warm in the summer.
Mrcool is so much cheaper that other units and it seems like a fairly easy install if you take your time and are careful.
I'm curious to know how these units are performing now after a couple of years of service. I don't want to buy one of these and in a few years have to replace it.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated.
