I mentioned a while back that there is now a DIY split system available -- a traditional style air handler coupled to an unusual compressor. This compressor looks like a mini split compressor vs the traditional square upright box type. Have seen this before as Mitsubishi is now making .. but this compressor has dip switches that allow it to be a 2 or 3T .. mated to what looks like the same air handler. I'm trying to understand if this is a gimmick or innovation.

But -- Interesting, when I went back to look --- Mr Cool is now coming out with multi-head systems in the DIY line ... they have a pre-order link. This will be very interesting. I'm seeing all kinds of configurations available ....

Another thing about the newest version of the Mr Cool -- they are now into the 20's for SEER and the line set is no longer attached to the head. You can buy different line sets based on what you need. Although one site is still only selling the 25' with the unit ... That's too long for a lot of installs. Other sites have all the different lengths and a coupling to link two together .. really cool.

They have good warranties all available to the DIY. This market is really changing and if I was in the HVAC business .. it would worry me. The Mr. Cool DIY is still more than going the other way (cheap non -DYI) .. but many of us have no way or no affordable way to get someone out to just do the connection and putting it into service

Now -- if you have a problem (leak I guess) ... they provide $450 for labor in the warranty information. That's interesting. Obviously -- the DIY goes out the window w/o equipment if you have a problem (leak) 5 years down the road. But -- the upfront investment is only $1600.

The double head unit pricing is more than 2x the single. Some places have two unit bundles for less than buying the two units separate. There are some benefits to the multi-head if you size them correctly to the loads.

For a lot of people (outside of FL and the south west) -- when you get into the 20's on SEER the potential saving with even a 28 starts to get small. Going from an old home unit of 6-8 to 20 is a big jump in savings .... 20 to 28 ..not so much.

This really changes my thinking regarding my utility building. I want the AC .... I have a propane heater. Do I spend $4k+ for a Mitsubishi hyper or do the MR Cool myself for less that 1/2 the price. Will it matter if I don't have the same low temp operation .. no .. because I have the propane unit. Or -- I now have the option to do a conventional air handler and use spiral pipe ...

Wow! This is great info. I was looking at the Mr Cool systems as well but didn't realize they have these new configurable systems. I will have to take another look.

Thanks
