Mr Cool not heating

I installed a Mr Cool DIY a few years ago and it had been working great. A few weeks ago it stopped blowing hot air. If I set it on heat, the air is room temp and the fan barely blows. If I set it to cool the fan works properly. Any ideas?

I'm not an expert on the matter. However, I spoke to "a guy" who believes that Mr Cool has been using sub-par valve cores (schrader valves) on the outside unit. And he said it's common for them to lose refrigerant slowly over time at the valve core. My Mr Cool DIY system is only 7 months old and it's doing the same thing as you've described. A fix that was suggested to me was using a r410a recharge/sealing kit. The recharge bottle needs to have a sealant (or leak stop) already included to stop any small leaks from continuing. If you do some web searching you'll find videos. Some websites require you to show proof of HVAC certification prior to purchasing a refrigerant kits, while others won't. These "recharge kits" are for systems will that have become low on refrigerant.

I cannot speak to the fix itself, as my system has been completely emptied of refrigerant. My Mr Cool 18k DIY unit requires 68 oz of refrigerant. Therefore a small recharge bottle (which contains around 30 oz of refrigerant) won't work.

Good luck!

If the indoor coil can't get warm enough, the indoor unit will not truly kick in (the fan will turn but slowly, or not at all.) as to not blow cold air and reduce comfort.

A refrigerant leak would cause that. But maybe that's not it at all. Hard to tell through a screen. ;)

Did you try cutting power to the unit for ~30 minutes to reset it ?

Did you find out the cause of your issue? I currently have the same problem my pipes are hot but no heat on the inside. It happened after a power outage trying the 30min reset.

Well, for anyone reading... They haven't improved the quality at all. I have Mr. Cool Minisplit that I installed about 2 years ago. Within the first 16 months I had to replace one of the air handlers as it started leaking refrigerant. Mr Cools warranty covered the cost of the actual unit, but I had to pay for the shipping, having the system recharged, etc. All in, it was about $1200. That was 6 months ago, and as I write this, it's 18F outside and the unit wont heat. Just checked, and the refrigerant is gone again... What a trash system.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most heat pumps don't work when the temp gets too low, unless they have an aux heat system.

That is true, but it started having issues a day or two ago when it was in the 50's and the HVAC tech found that it was leaking from the other unit.

I was having a heating problem last winter with my Mr Cool.... Outdoor unit would try to run... shake and shut down.
Tried all sorts of things with no success...
And then noticed the inside filters were totally clogged.
Cleaned them and now everything works perfectly.
I have now added monthly vacuuming of the filters once a month, whether they need it or not.
With temps in the low 20s, toasty warm in the garage!

Respectfully, I will correct you, as you are wrong. ;)

Pretty much all newer heatpumps are efficient at least down to -5*F. A lot also do great even around -22*F.

Heatpumps don't have aux. heat per say. The auxiliary part is not contained in the heatpump, rather in a separate unit such as a air handler/furnace or other heating equipment. :)
