Based on the discussions on here, I'm looking at a Mr Cool 36k minisplit for my new 36x50x14 steel frame shop. It will have 1.5" closed cell spray foam on the walls and 2" closed cell foam on the ceiling. I also came across Alpine Blueridge model that seems very similiar, tho the wifi is a $50 addon. I talked to a friend that installed several Blueridge models and he like them. I know it's a smaller unit then ideal for the size of space, but I'm not into spending $5k+ because I won't be using it that much. Any recommendations on either model?

I installed a 18k Mr Cool in my garage. No complaints, other than that the temp sensor inside the unit was a few degrees off from the set temp. But I was able to configure it in the app.

In a building that size I think you'd be much more satisfied in the long run with two 18K units rather than a single 36K. There's not a big difference in the equipment price for either combination, but the air distribution will be far better with two units rather than one.

The SEER on most 36K standard minis is around 16 while the 18K units are around 19, so you get 15% to 20% greater efficiency with the smaller units. Higher efficiency 36K units are available, but the price premium is hundreds of dollars.

Using numbers from Pioneer's site as I'm most familiar with their units, two 18K units would give you a range of cooling from 9K to 48K btu with both units running. A single 36K gives you a range of 16K to 48K btu. Numbers are similar among various brands, but the wider operating range at the lower end is advantageous during conditions where you need some cooling but not a lot, as it keeps the unit running rather than cycling on and off. Similar capacities apply in heating mode as well, with the obvious qualification that the ability to provide heat falls off as outdoor temperatures drop.

In deciding on one unit or two, it's worthwhile to keep in mind that mini splits have a lot of similarities to window units from the standpoint of air distribution. Multiple units with the same aggregate capacity will always give more uniform temperatures throughout the space as compared to one large single unit.

About 5 weeks ago I put in a one ton Blueridge unit. It has only been 5 weeks, but so far it is great. The only problem I had was the dimensions for where to cut the hole and mount the bracket are ultra confusing, they list every model on one page. Next time, I will just measure.

I just ordered the Blueridge 36k DIY. It was $20 less than Mr Cool but doesn't have wifi built in, that's another $49. I'm guessing I can add another generic usb wifi adaptor later if I decide to go that route. Also got a mounting pad for 42.99 and electrical whip for 17.99 for total of $2239.38 delivered. I do like the idea of 2 18k units, I looked it up and it would have been roughly 3400 for 2 of those. It would take a bit to pay for the added efficiency to cover the extra $1100 cost. I think it will be fine for what I need. If not, @metlmunchr , you can say " I told you so!" And I could add another unit later too. Kind of a tough decision, both companies products seem very similiar.

They look identical, only difference being the name sticker. Im talking about the condensor, evaporators are a little different. They probably come out of the same factory

I haven't seen the Blueridge brand, but I installed a 24k Mr. Cool system in my F-I-L's trailer last summer. It was the DIY kit that doesn't need to have the lines vacuumed. It was super easy to install and has worked great so far. Oh, and we used vinyl downspout pieces to make a chase for the lines & electrical instead of the kit you can buy. Much cheaper that way.

Installed a 36k diy Mr Cool unit in our 30x40x12. Space is only partially insulated and the unit dropped the interior from low 90's ambient to high 70's in just a few hours of running. Extremely happy with how comfortable we are working in the space.

My Blueridge minisplit got delivered today. I hadn't opted for the $25 liftgate option on checkout, but when the freight company called to schedule setup, they didn't have a straight truck in the area, so they sent it out on a semi with a liftgate. I met them in town since the dirt road isn't real nice for semis. Now I have to find place in my garage to store it till the shop gets put up.

Ignoring any potential increase in efficiency, a fan or two to distribute the air around the shop should make up for only having one air handler.

I've installed both Mr Cool and Blueridge furnace and central AC's. Both are nearly identical. No complaints of quality given the price. I also just became an authorized distributor in the state of Wisconsin for Mr Cool. I think you'll be good with either one.

I thought they looked very similiar and specs are pretty much identical. Suspect they may come out of the same factory.
