Won't work well in a 2.5 car. I had mine in a 22x24 garage and it barely raised the temp. Maybe get two cause they're 1/2 off

That's a hell of a deal on great little heater. Cheapest lately was $119 on sale at Northern Tool and maybe $109 with another RetailMeNot discount.

Get the optional hose to connect to 20 lb BBQ bottle of propane.

I love my Big Buddy and it's saved my **** when sleeping in camper when out pheasant hunting in cold/snow. I used it in shop also sometimes and never have problem with fumes. The built-in low oxygen sensor will shut it down if there is problem.

P.S. OP you might also want the optional AC/DC plug so you plug into 120v and run the fan that generally takes batteries. With it running full blast at 18K Btu and the fan . . . I'd say an insulated garage that size will heat up within 20 or 30 minutes, or less. You could cheat a little and hang tarps (ceiling to floor) around the car you're working to keep the heat more localized. Once you've got the area heated up, you can back the heat down to medium or low.

If you don't bother to heat the entire garage and just heat yourself, you'll do much better.

I have one and love it, no fumes and while the fan doesn't move a huge volume of air it does help with circulation. I use it to supplement the wood stove in a small cabin and it does a great job. I'd agree that it's a good idea to get the hose to use it off of a bulk tank but if you do get a filter as well, it will keep gunk from the hose from ruining the catalytic element. I made my own adapter to power it off of a rechargeable 6v lantern cell because it'll drain 4 D cells quickly.

They sell little 1500 watt radiant heaters that do that better for cheaper but yes I agree. I guess I misunderstood his intended usage. Anyhow it says it'll heat 400 SF so should be okay to take the chill out

I've had several heaters of this type over the years. The bottom line is the BTU output. At 18,000 max this unit is going to struggle in most situations for heating any large area.

I have an older one similar to this..but with the same output...40,000 BTU's.

It doesn't have the ODS feature, but for an extra 27 bucks, it should be capable of heating even fairly large un-insulated areas.

Edit: Not dissing the Big Buddy....If the heat output meets your needs, it's a very nice heater at a good price..

Mine does great heating the shop portion of a 2.5 car garage.

Insulate your garage and use the heater close to where you work and it'll do just fine in most winter climates. I also use the AC adapter for the fan and plumbed it for a 20 lbs tank that's on the outside of the shop.

I usually start on high to take the chill off and then switch it to low and it does just fine.

I love this heater. That's a killer price!!

Can you run this on your BBQ tank in the off season?

Yes with an adapter hose and regulator.

I run mine straight from 20 lb BBQ tank with HOSE to Big Buddy. Got the hose at Northern Tool for around $20 IIRC. Thus, I have not used a regulator.

Haven't had any symptoms of "gunk in hose" that other poster mentioned as my hose doesn't have a filter either.

I've ran probably 5 to 7 BBQ size bottles of propane through my Big Buddy and it hasn't missed a beat . . . . . GREAT heater !!!

These Big Buddy & smaller Little Buddy are top picks of fisherman in ice huts on the great lakes !! ;)

That's a good price. When it's cold out, I use my propane torpedo heater to get the chill out of the air and then run the big buddy to maintain temps. It will heat my insulated 24'x32' garage by itself, but I like to get it warm quick with the torpedo first. I also bought the $20 hose to connect to my 20lb bottle and the AC adapter for the fan. Both are MUST have items.

Not sure what store. Saw this at a deal site (fatwallet). My store was regular price unfortunately. Didn't get it, will wait for the next deal.

I have just the regular "portable buddy" heater and it's saved my **** twice when my furnace decided to go out once winter hit. I has able to heat my bedroom enough to stay comfortable, get some sleep and not be worried about zonking out from CO poisoning.

Looks like it's $109 now, but Tractor Supply has it in stores and online for $99. I'm getting one today.
