I have a Mr. Heater Big Max. When I turn the thermostat on now in my garage, the fan turns on igniter will start the first 3 flames (sometimes only 2) igniting but then doesn't stay lite. After doing this for 3 cycles it shuts off. The green led light blinks 2 times but if I keep turning my thermostat on and off, eventually it will start working. Have had it for about 2 -3 years now and this is the first time having issues.

My area of expertise isn't HVAC, but I have the same heater and had to contact them when I installed because something got damaged in transit. They were more than helpful and accommodating when I talked to them. Sent out parts no proof of receipt needed. Even a couple extra things in case I needed them.

If you don't get the answers you need here, I'd call their tech line tomorrow. Good luck!

Since you have the cover off, try blowing everything out with compressed air and then cleaning everything really well. I have two of the heaters and dust and spiders collect there over the spring, summer, and fall and sometimes cause ignition issues. Not often but occasionally in the 8 years I've been using Big Maxx heaters. The code is indicating the lack of flame...which is what you are seeing on the top 2 burners.

Nothing in this post should be misunderstood, interpreted, misinterpreted, or construed to be of a political nature.

Top of the burner, white wire. It is connected to a wire rod that sticks in the flame, take it out and clean off the rod with some steel wool and put it back together and give it a try.

The wire is a flame sensor. Flame will conduct electricity. The control board sends out a tiny electrical signal to the flame sensor and the board measures how many micro-amps is flowing through the flame. The wire gets dirty, basically insulates the wire and it will not conduct electricity. Not enough micro-amps when it lights, the heater tries to light three times, then fails and locks out. It could be the board, but the flame sensor cleaning is free so try it first.

Those Mr Heaters are fairly inexpensive

80,000 to 125,000 btu for under $1,000.00. I think that’s a good deal

I bought some Electric patio heaters that retail for around $900 they dont put out that type of heat

Need to look at the burner control board for the flashes to see what the problem is. Cycling power will reset the control and u will lose any info in the control. Have to read it first.

Unplugged the unit, cleaned the rod and plugged it back it. Working good now at the moment. Appreciate the help.

I had the same thing happen to me last year. Did blown in insulation in the garage attic AFTER I installed my Big Maxx and even though I turned the furnace off while I was doing it I think over time it sucked in some of the dust and stuff. Cleaned off flame sensor and haven't had an issue since.

Yep, common deal with those heaters. I now clean mine out a couple times a year as a precaution as I set it to hold 50 degrees when not out there. Takes 2 minutes and it hasn't let me down since.

My background is HVAC. From the pic you posted your flames look like the pressure is low and if the top 2 burners don’t get ignited within a specific time the trial for ignition ends and starts over. There is a very thin groove that supposed to carry the flame from the bottom where the ignitor is to the top where the flame sensor is. Cleaning the fronts of the burners as well sensor is a pretty good and basic maintenance thing you could do.
