Hey all - I know, I know, I hate to rehash a topic that's been discussed in the past, but just want confirmation of what I am seeing here and online before I make a purchase.

I am starting a new build soon, which will include a 36x30 attached garage (roughly 1,100 sq ft.). Walls and doors will be insulted and the garage has three west facing windows. 2 doors (16' and 8') are on the North side. Ceilings are 10'. I am on the edge of Zones 5 and 6.

With all this taken into consideration, online calculators are telling me I need roughly 60,000 - 63,000 BTUs -- assuming they are correct. My current house has a 45,000 BTU Big Maxx in a 2 car garage and I love it. I keep the garage 50 - 55 unless I am working in there.

With these heaters being roughly 80% efficient, I am thinking I should get the 80K BTU unit. Does that seem right to everyone? Just want to make sure -- I'm planning to pick this up now while on sale and toss it in storage.

Thanks in advance.

Appreciate the response. What I'm wrestling with are the tiers --- there is a 50K and an 80K. If you figure 80% efficiency, that equates to 40K and 64K.

Kind of under and oversized either way you go.

Given your description and location, I’d go with the 80k. Don’t think you’ll be happy with the 50k. I have an 80k Mr Heater in a slightly larger garage. A 60k would have worked too but Mr Heater doesn’t make a 60k. I live in southern zone 4

Don’t over think this it’s far from exact.
Even the wall chart at the home center works and gets you in the ball park.
I use 45k in 1000 sqft stand alone shop on the edge of 6/7 zones. It has 75k heater prior, that rusted out And had a board failure after years of unknown ( to me) use.

50K BTU will be plenty assuming reasonable construction considering your location.

My neighbor has a 30K in his 900* sqft shop in North Dakota. No way I would put in an 80K!

I heat 900+ sqft with 50K and not enough insulation in the ceiling.

Here in ND I would put 50K in a garage that large and not even think twice about it. Plus we get -30F or worse here and your area might see -10F.
