Mr Heater install inquiry

My son has a small 22’ x 22’ garage that we are working on to wire, insulate and heat to make it useable in the winter months. The ceiling height is low at just over 8.5’. He’s picked up one of the Mr. Heater gas unit heaters that should be more than enough to heat the area. The instructions state that the bottom of the heater should be a minimum of 8’ off the floor. The heater itself is 12” deep, so obviously we would be at around 7.5’ from the floor. What is the reason for this? Is it a safety recommendation so someone doesn’t drive into it or some other reason. Any ideas?

I asked the same question a few years ago regarding a previous shop. Don’t believe I got a good answer. I just bought a 50k btu u it a couple of weeks ago. Will be hanging off a 10’8” ceiling so no issues for me. They are good heaters, maybe ask the company’s tech support to get an answer? Best of luck with your project!

I think it's so that nothing will hit it. There was another thread about this a while ago. In short, it will work. But if someone hits it with a vehicle (or their head), you didn't install it to code.

The "normal" height of a garage OH door is 8’ so the ENTRANCE door height will dictate the height of the heater to keep something from hitting it........ "IF" you FAIL the inspection because you don’t have the height "as per installation instructions" install two bollards under the heater so nothing will run into it.

BTW! Some installers mount hanging heaters in a corner of the garage.

please help.we are installing80,000 BTU Mr heater big maxx.we bought American B venting.we are unsure what adapter to use on back of heater.we bought a 90 degree elbow..its real loose on fitting on back of heater..cant see screw holes as it slides over the holes.i jave seen a video that appears the guy had a different adapter other than 90 degree elbow

Kind of figured it was to do with a hitting it issue. Where it’s being mounted would be very unlikely it would ever get hit, you’d have to try to hit it. My concern really, is if there were a fire would the insurance company find a way to pass blame on mounting height.

IMHO, "code" is the minimum requirement.

IMHO, "code" is the minimum requirement. In the case of the heater, a tall man with a big hat should be able to walk under it.
