Mr Heater Radiant Construction Heaters

I'm looking to heat my new 6150 sq foot shop, which has 22 foot sidewalls. R10 fiberglass insulation throughout. How well do you think the 125,000 BTU heaters would work?

We are in West Texas, so it does not get really cold here (0°F is the absolute lowest a few times a winter). If it gets really cold I wouldn't expect the shop to be roasty toasty. I am thinking I would get 2 of those, and strategicaly locate them where I need them at the time. I do not expect the building to be 60°. Not going to heat 24/7. Would this give me some reasonable heat in the main working areas? If not, what else do I need to look at?

It would likely work - but contruction heaters are not usually code for anything other than temporary construction use. Too much CO, and too easy to move next to some other combustible.

Well I have over 165,000 cubic feet of air space. So I am concerned that convection heating will be a waste of time, even if I hang fans on the celing to push the warm air back down. Hanging things above (IR tube heaters) doesn't appeal to me either, as I plan on running an overhead hoist. This application is borderline temporary, as its not going to be used all the time. But the main things that gets me is that the construction type heaters are so much cheaper than the typical Mr Heater, IR tubes, etc.

What do other folks do for heating LARGE spaces? Again, I don't need heat everywhere, but in my working area at the time. I won't be working in each area at the same timeof course.

Bolt, I have the 2nd heater that you posted although mine is the 30,000 - 80,000 BTU model. I use it to heat my garage/shop which is about 550 sq ft. It works pretty well and so far I am very happy with it

As far as your question goes, alot of the heat does rise. In my experiance with it it warms up the area around it as well but yes, alot of the heat does rise. My solution to this was sticking a blower fan in the rafters and simply aiming it downward. If you did set up some fans above I believe that you would have sufficient heating. Also, be sure to crack some doors and windows do to the CO2. You should also get a good CO2 detector, maybe even one that detects propane/natural gas leaks. So, it's up to you. Thanks for joining to post that, Andy. I have thought about the convection some more, and it seems with intermittant use it will cause condensation, as it will cause warm air to be circulated around cold equipment and surfaces, causing moisture. I am currently looking at the Schwank line of IR heaters, impressive, efficient stuff, but who knows, I may not be as impressed once I get the price on them. http://www.schwankgroup.com/en/prod-conheater.asp They are also low CO output. They also have some nice fixed location IR heaters, and tube heaters.

No problem Bolt. Just my two cents on my experiance with convection heating thus far, I have not noticed even remotely any condensation on, around, or near anything. It has worked very well and am very pleased.
