Just want to make sure I've got this right for venting a 50k BTU Mr Heater unit....I think what I need for Horizontal venting in a residential garage is:

- All Category 3 Stainless Pipe
- Adapter from 3" to 4"
- 45 degree 4" pipe out of the heater
- 3-5 foot length of 4" pipe to go outside
- 4" thimble for passing through the wall
- Some sort of vent termination

So questions:
- What type of pipe is this referred to as? Just category 3?
- Is the pipe supposed to be single or double walled?
- Can a thimble cover a 9" thick wall (drywall, 2x4, sheathing, air space, brick)?
- Any examples of the proper terminating cap for horizontal?

Piping: B vent
You may not need an adapter since mine came with one installed already
double wall
Thimble: depends on manufacturer but i'd guess you'll need an oversized thimble for that setup.

FYI just use 3" B vent for the entire run.

That sounds entirely contradictory to everything I have read so far for horizontal venting?

In the US, I don't think you can do B vent for horizontal anymore.

Your location says Canada though. So you might not find anyone who knows what your local authority will actually approve here.

As far as I've read, our codes up here are the same...

Nemo, I just finished my install and everything I received with the heater showed updated codes requiring type III or 3 stainless vent for the exhaust portions of the vent to termination. I believe even the vertical B vent now has stainless inside for the exhaust. It is a National Code for the US.

B-vent has not been allowed for horizontal venting in Canada for a few years.

Category III stainless is required. Mr. Heater's part number for their kit is F102860. The kit contains everything you need, except perhaps additional length if you need to terminate the vent further away from the outside wall, such as if it exits the building near a vented eave.

Yeah, the thing about the kit is I don't need two straight lengths (just one) and the thimble won't fit my 9" thick wall and it's $470+tax. So I've tried to piece it together myself.

Here's the list I've got based on Z Vent parts (prices are some USD list price that was in a pdf, probably not relevant).

4" Thimble 10" depth 2SVSWTEF04 $59
4" termination hood 2SVSHTX04 $75 or termination elbow 2SVSTEX0445 $81 or box 2SVSRTF04 $63
4" 45 degree angle 2SVEEWCF0445 $73
4" straight 2 feet 2SVEPWCF0402 $80
3" to 4" adapter Z Vent - 2SVSI0304 $47
3" Universal appliance adapter 2SVSNA03.5 $62

Shop Around too! I got one reducer on ebay for 1/2 what the suppliers charge, and I used www.supplyhouse.com and www.houseneeds.com to piece my install together. I ended up with 6" of vent left over after install. Some of it was z-flex novavent and it all works together nicely.

I sprayed soapy water inside the seals before installing it helps to keep the seal from ripping away from the ID. Also I used a wire brush handle to work the edges and flare them a tiny bit to aid in the install. All worked very well together and very tight seal.

I wish...none of the places in the US ship to Canada at an affordable rate. Worse still, the supply places here won't sell to people who aren't licensed or contractors with business accounts.

The guy I've got who is going to do the final gas hookup is going to use his distributor to get me what I need...but I still need to figure out what to get.

When I was looking at this (I’m in the US) I talked with the city inspector and he he said that in my case , the inspector said they required that I install *what’s in the manual* that came with the heater.
He looked at the book, asked which way I was going. I said ‘horizontal’. He put his finger on the page and held it up in from of me for effect.... and said “I want to see THAT”.
I don’t know what your guy will do but that’s what mine did.
I had previously ordered a “tankless water heater” vent assembly that others have used; he shot that down as there was no ‘tee’. I had to cancel that order.
