No 40# won’t do the trick

Very dependent on tank temperature, propane level in tank ........winter temperatures 100# would be the bare minimum.

There propane vapor charts on the internet that use BTU draw, tank size and tank temperature.
Or call the propane supplier.

MI is cold so a 40 lb tank will run it but not for too long before it freezes up...depending on outside temps. If you put the tank inside when it's running, it won't freeze up....but that's considered to be unsafe since ideally you shouldn't bring 20lb and larger tanks inside a building you are heating. The probability of something happening is low but the consequences IF something bad happens is very high. That said, OPD tanks are no more likely to vent themselves indoors than a propane line breaking and filling your garage/shop with propane.

If you manifold two 40 lb tanks you'll get longer run times off two tanks than you would one tank. That said, I'd want to run it off larger tanks. You will most likely pay less per gallon to have your 250-500 gallon tank filled vs taking your smaller tanks to a fill station.

Also it will run just under a pound per hour depending on how well you are insulated and how large the building is you are heating.

For your heater 50,000 BTUS
40# tank at 30 deg will produce 26,400 BTUS " AT 50 DEG 35,500"
100# tanks at 30 deg will produce 52,400 BTUS
150# tank at 30 deg will produce 64,700 BTUS
420# tank at 30 deg will produce 122,000 BTUS

you can see you would starve the tank with a 40lb tank and like said above it will freeze to lack of vapor and not keeping up with the high demand

most company's will want you to have 30 days of storage and generally will charge more to have to keep coming and filling it more often then that. check your local suppliers they may not have rental fees if they set a tank for you.
