They are pretty much similar if not exactly same as these units (inverter+) 16-18seer,

https://highseer.com/pdf/WYS-17-2015.pdf

the 12K go down to 4560 BTU cooling

^^This.

We have a 12K in our bedroom - about 12x15, pretty much close it off at night, and it runs all night, set at 76-77, rarely ever feel it run, maintains perfectly and silent. The outside unit shuts off when it reaches temp, the air handler goes silent, but still turning very slowly.

What's your application? (asker)

Got my 24k running today. The drain looked like a shower head for the first hour. It rained today when the doors were open so humidity was super high.

2,000 sq foot garage with 12 foot ceiling, r30 in the ceiling r19 in the walls. Let it run for 2.5 hours 5:30pm to 8pm and it dropped from 88/89 to 82/83. The humidity difference was huge as well.

A quick question here...
Everyone is talking about how good they cool...
Anyone have some feed back on how well the heat pump works in these things?
A few times during the winter my shop can drop to an average of 30 - 35F Every once and awhile it will go lower, usually only a few days.
Will the heat pump in these units keep the shop around 60F or will I need to "help" it along with a heater?

Depends on the outside temp. At 17 degrees the heat pump in them lose about 40% of their btu output. The 24k unit only puts out around 15,000 btu of heat when it’s 17 degrees outside per the tech at Ingram’s.

Im glad you asked that Jeff. I was wondering the same thing. Im considering one of these units but more so for heat than the AC. Im looking at $4200 to have a gas furnace installed. This would save me some cash, but I want to be warm this winter 50-60 degrees would be fine. I know there are a million things to consider when talking heat, (insulation, location etc) . Just wondering if it works and if its a HUGE hit on the power bill.

This summer I've worked in my free standing 28' x 32' garage and am tired of the discomfort of the heat and humidity. Last week, when eBay had a 15% off up to $100, I ordered a 18,000, 17.5 seer Mr Cool mini-split that is scheduled to deliver tomorrow.

I understand that I need the double wide 20 amp breaker for 220v single phase. My box is Sq D and they are available at the local Lowe's. Because I plan to install this in the back of the shop I need to run about 50 ft of wiring. Will 10 gage wire be sufficient?

I've read all 15 pages and I'm excited to get this thing installed

With outside temps in the low 20's and a fully insulated garage with decent airseal on doors and 600sqft, my 18k had no problem keeping temp at 60. The electric bill was a bigger increase than in AC mode with outside temps over 100 and high 70's setpoint, though. We had a particularly cold few days with temps around 10F at night, and I just shut it off then since I wasn't going to be working and didn't want to waste electricity. Can't remember for sure, but I don't think my garage has ever gone below about 40F with no heat.

Thanks for all the info. This has been a great thread to read. I have decided to order mine today. Im going with the 24k MRCOOL DIY. I have a 24x32x12 that is very well insulated. Hoping this will do the trick this winter. Any thoughts on where to order, looks like Costco online is the best price.

I just installed a costco 1.5 ton, 18000 Mr. Cool. Then I saw that I was to plug the unused drain hole. My unit is on the wall. Where is drain hole; googling it does not come up with it. I emailed Mr Cool, but this is Sunday and I would like to know today. Appreciate any help. Thanks

It's already plugged. The drain comes pre-attached on the right side. You would have to swap the drain line and plug to run it from the left side. That's what I did on my 1ton install.
When you start the unit you'll have a lot of water running down the wall if it's not plugged. They make a surprising amount of condensate water. My 2ton fills a 2gl watering jug a couple of times a day.

Hi folks,
New onboard and was immediately drawn to this thread, having moved my welding and grinding into one side of a 24 x 30 2 car garage with no heat or cooling but insulated.
New England this year has been more like New Orleans but we can still expect snow this winter and, with HRH parking her car in the garage I'm concerned about adding heat.
Does this Mr. Cool help at all with winter humidity from melted snow?

Not a split capacitor motor. It's a modulating motor.

Hey Fellas,

I just ordered my 24k DIY Mr Cool mini split today. I found it at Costco online for $1299.99. After taxes and shipping it came to $1458.00. I called Ingrams and they couldn't touch that price. I really wanted to go through Ingrams but they couldn't beat that price. I will post some pics of install when it gets here.

That's $100 less than I paid for mine from Ingrams. Someone had a price online and they matched it - $1562 shipped, all in. I'm not unhappy at all.

The scratch and dent 12K unit was $850. Seems like cheating - and it works perfectly.

I'm pretty happy to get 3tons of AC all in for about $2500!

The 36k unit from Costco is around 2,100 after shipping and taxes.

I am in love with the 24k unit I got. Pumps out lots of cool air when needed, and it costs about 1.50 a day for me to keep my shop at 82 when I am not there.

Great thread. I had no idea they were so cheap. Not long ago it was like$5k to get one. I called Ingrams to inquire about sizing. Looks like I need the 3 ton unit. Around $2300 or so. Seems like I could install it in a weekend.

Bringing this thread back up...

My two DIY units have been running all summer now, the first one installed about May. We absolutely love these things. Even on the hottest days we were comfortable in this old drafty and non-insulated house.

Yeah, the hottest month pushed our electricity usage up into tier 3 and doubled our bill, but it was worth it. As soon as it cooled off a little our usage dropped back down to normal. We can't complain.

I really thought there were be a dependability issue with these - there's just not. They run like little swiss clocks. I've checked both filters on the air handlers after 3-4 months now and they're not even dirty.

My guess is we'll enjoy them all winter as well. They've been a game-changer for this house, it's so much cleaner since the doors and windows have been closed, and so much more comfortable. Yeah, we should'a done it a long time ago. :)

Yeah, I think the 12K unit comes in at 17.
These are not high-seer units. But surely better than 20 or 40 year old equipment. :)

Yes, they really are problem solvers.

When I built my house last year I installed copper lines and the wiring for a mini split above my garage. I am about to insulate the room and order a unit for it. What's the deal with the pre charged line set? From the video I watched they said the refrigerant is in the unit and the line set was just shipped with nitrogen in it. Is that a correct understanding? Also want to buy a unit with a second indoor setup to put in the garage, do both indoor units have to be installed at the same time or can I get the garage unit running before I start the upstairs unit? The garage will have to have lines drain and wiring ran to it, and I already have a vacuum pump and gauges to evacuate the lines

The copper line size is matched to the unit capacity by manufacture spec, so either you have an intended/spec'd unit with the appropriate lines, or you'll need to put one in that utilizes whatever size line you already installed.

The MRCOOL DIY unit is a outside and inside matched set with a lineset already attached to the inside head unit. It has schrader type valves on the compressor end that attach to it and needs no further vac or charge. But it is a fixed length (25') and works with a single head unit. They do not offer multi-head units.

So are you talking about a complete second system or a split system with two head units? If the latter I'm at a loss cuz my experience is all with the DIY units.

Heres what I found.
This kit contains two heads, two line sets and a single outdoor condensor/ fan unit. I thought it would be perfect for my situation as zi could heat and cool both areas at once on a single outdoor setup.

Mr cools video i wstched online showed cutting and flaring the lines to whatever lengthvyou needed, pressure testing, then pulling a vacuum and opening the valves on the condensor to release the refrigerant into the lines.

This isn't the pre charged line set setup.

This set is typical to most mini splits where you flare, pressure test, and evacuate the lines.

The condenser is typically pre charged with a predetermined amount of refrigerant from the manufacturer for average line set lengths and will need to be adjusted based on length.

My line set that is running to my upstairs is probably around 25-30 feet or so. The line set I would need to run for my garage would probably be about 8-10 feet. I just wondered what the pre charged line set was, since it just appeared to be a nitrogen purged set of lines in the video. If that's all it is, I will just get this setup and give it a go.
