Muffler on Compressor?

How many put the compressor outside the shop? Presently mine is inside the 700 sq/ft shop and it does make me twinge when it comes on. Several have advised me to build a lean to and put it outside and I'm wondering how much an intake muffler would help. New shop is larger but main room is 28x31 so not a huge difference and thesmaller space is office/clean room so that's not an option. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I used a auto muffler on my compressor intake, and it made a BIG difference. Try it, you wont be disappointed.

I installed a pair of Solberg air filter/silencers and it made about a 5 dB reduction in the noise level. I measured the before and after with an iPhone app from about 4' away. The ambient noise was around 37-40 dB.

Before: 90-93 dB.

After: 85-87 dB.

Intake filter silencer with a 90 fitting should be a huge help as the direction change will reduce pressure waves

I put one of those intake filter silencers on my small harbor freight 12 gallon. It was ear ringing loud before, it is much more tolerable now. Made a very noticeable difference. I say try it. If it isn't quiet enough then move it outside

I used the stock, little air cleaner that came with my CH 60 gal compressor. But instead of mounting it right on the unit, I ran a 6 ft length of automobile heater hose up toward the roof and mounted the air cleaner up there, at the end of that 6 ft hose.

We put a Oldsmobile air cleaner on my brother in laws and it made a huge difference. Easy to get filters and cheap. Point inlet down. It is a 7.5hp Sailor Beall and he does body work out of his garage so there is a lot of dust.

Get a Solberg via Amazon and don't look back. It works.

yep night and day difference! I used a couple of cherry bomb mufflers in a row and the attached a airfilter on that and it dropped the noise in half.!! i moved mine into another side of the wall first and then it was loud in there until the mufflers were put on.

I actually threaded a large oil filter (Motorcraft FL-1A) on my 5hp/60 gal Campell HF compressor. It works, but I've always wondered if I've restricted the intake too much with it.

The auto air cleaner idea is great!
They are designed to be as much a silencer as a filter.

the auto air cleaner, is the way to go, only get the newer type, with flat filter air filter box from a v8 performance car, they have a built in noise reducer, (exp) ford mustang fox body, or a truck, filters are cheap, and you can mount the box anywhere,

The Olds air filter was under the bench and Fram filters are like $3. A truck or van would have a lot larger filter but they cost more. Use what you can get for free or have on hand

Great thread... I just ordered one of the Solberg's off Amazon for $14 to use while I work on a better solution. Mine isn't ridiculous but it's definitely annoying and could use some effort to resolve...

You get creative. If using threaded iron pipe, you can use a pipe flange bolted to a flat piece of stock with a hole drilled in it. Pretty much any way that you can make it work. To isolate vibration, using a rubber hose also works between the filter box and the pump inlet(s).

My compressors have lived outside since I built my shop. No issues for me other than me not having to hear the thing run lol.

I used a 1" pipe, a mower muffler from TSC and an air cleaner adapter ring for the filter. Does pretty good on intake noise, but not much impact on overall compressor noise.

Ours looked like this so the Olds air cleaner fit right on.

But I agree that if you have something else just weld a flat piece of steel to a 3/4" fitting and drill a hole in it

mine is in it's own small shed 4x4x8 but I tend to work on my junk as the city sleeps ,as they say.. so it being quite makes my neighbors happy..
